Re: The new toy
Me too now?
Looks pretty clean. Not exactly the beater I expected for that price.

Rear main needs to be replaced. Asking price was $3000 got it down to 2500.

Re: The new toy
There is room to work on those. A rear main and some gaskets won't be bad.

Re: The new toy
Perhaps just the picture but it looks like the front wheels are canted out at the bottom when compared to the top? Possibly bad spindle bearings? While you're under there you might try stretching a string across the center-line of the front axle tubes. In the past I have had to repair many such problems. Requires jacking the center of the axle up using floor hold-down rings or similar then welding a metal strap across from one axle tube to the other under the center carrier before letting the jack down. Usually worked best to jack up about 1/4-1/2 inch above center in the middle then weld and release. Nature and gravity will take over from that point. I've seen some so bowed down in the center it made engaging/disengaging the lock-out hubs impossible or nearly so due to binding.
Nice looking pony otherwise!

Re: The new toy
If I am not mistaken this is Fords "X" beam front axle. They are only aligned properly with a specific weight on the front parked level. Turn it around with the front parked uphill and you probably have positive camber. There is no way for them to have the correct camber all the time. No amount of aligning or worrying about it will fix it.
They are hard on front tires for sure. Just something you will have to live with. This IFS was not one of Fords better ideas.

Re: The new toy
Oops! My bad. Didn't look close enough. I can see the angles in the independent front suspension axle on closer inspection of the picture. My previous post only applies to solid tube style front axles.
About the only thing that can be done to correct camber angles on an IFS (other than expensive alignment shims that won't correct very much or springs on the shocks) is install heavier GVW front springs. Some sacrifice in ride would be encountered though.

Re: The new toy
I like it. I hated my g ride bronco for steering but, then again, I thought new crown vics had bad steering. Forget the rear main seal unless you are losing a qt or more every 3K. Brule, Steve and many others will roll their eyes when I suggest BAR "snake oil" but, it works for me when added with each oil change for awhile.

It's an El Camino. It's still here, but took a back seat when I replaced the roof and did the re-pipe on the house.HenryJ wrote:Just remembered another project...What ever happened to the Ranchero?

Ah, El Camino! Even better. For some reason I had Ranchero on the brain.
