While it is true that the emissions system parts are covered under warranty for at least 8 years or 80k miles, I think you are better off without the precat.
There really is no need for it. Another one of those good ideas that just didn't work very well.

You'll be glad you did. I was. Mine was only 30-40% plugged on visual inspection and I can't believe what a difference it made in performance and mileage.

Yeah, I am quite familiar with the emissions warranty and I know what a traumatic experience it would be to get a dealer to actually look at the precat. Even though I am in tight with a service manager it would be a hassle. I'll eliminate it and then see where I am at concerning engine temps and mileage.
Brule, the improved VSC will make rigging the fans up to get home a little more difficult but, very doable. I am curious on why they are still marketing both models. I can take photos of the failed unit's parts if, you deem it worthwhile.

Welll, just had the precat removed. The tech said that it had a couple of bad places but, advised it wasn't bad I'll try to post pics if, anyone thinks they can tell one way or the other. It has got to be a serious restriction of exhaust flow . The point of light in the pics are of the other end. They are the same size on both ends.

Well, I honestly couldn't look but, he tapped it several times without hearing any rattling. Those points of light observed through either end look pretty small to me but, I don't know what they should look like. Would I gain any info if I busted through one of the screens?

The damage would have been visible. Melting and plugging.
Tapping and listening for rattling are signs for one that is really bad. Banging on them is a very crude method and really not very effective. A pressure test with the system hot is a much better indicator. Even a temperature comparison would be better.
We will say your cat was fine, as the precat looks decent.
