Need help badly Guys, this one is way over my head!!

Post by necrewcabowner »

Ok, so for some unknown reason, my s10CC rolled down my driveway yesterday, and a tree has bent the passenger door all the way forward, breaking the hinges.

After a lot of pushing, and wiggling, i was able to get the door closed. but its not seating right, and theres a gap

Aside froma few paint chips, the door is in perfect shape. the windows and door locks still work great, etc...

my question is, what can i expect going to a body shop? or should i try to take it off, install new hinges, and do it myself. Ive got a beginner - slightly moderate skill level when it comes to my CC.

PS - i cut my Air Dam Box out, like i saw here, and it made a huge difference! thanx for all the great tips, and advice i find here, this site is a blessing!!

Our hinges are welded in place. You will need the assistance of a body shop to get everything bent back into shape where it will seal again.
I have pushed and pulled some doors back into position with blocks, jacks , portapower, and pullers. It is kind of an art and you need to understand what can and can't be moved with out creating more problems.

Most places will give you an estimate. That will let us all know what needs to be done and we can help you decide if it is something you can handle, if you already don't know.

You need to train your self in the routine of setting the parking brake and putting the transmission in park. :)

The sheet metal is pretty weak. I had the wind fold a door to the fender on one of the fleet Silverados.

It is not just GM but, the whole situation is getting pretty sorry.

Weight cost power and mpg. Cut weight and increase both. Cheap gains.
Metal is better than that of years past, but it is thinner.

Sorry to hear about that. I did that years ago when I was a kid on my sisters 1981 Impala. It dented the door a little bit but the door took out a friends big wooden fence near his driveway. So did your truck roll down the driveway when it was it park? That may be a bigger problem then the gap in the door. Hopefully it gets fixed soon. Welcome to the site!! I've learned a great deal from the people on this site. Thanks!!

Like Brule said about using the E-Brake.
From the sound of it you may have a bigger problem than the door. . If you were in Park without the E-Brake on you may have sheared the parking pawl off the transmission.

Did the welded part of the hinges break off or just the hinge pins holding the door on? My hinge pins required replacing when I purchased the truck as an older gentleman had it and used the door as a crutch to get in so they worked their way out and the door wouldn't line up. I had them replaced for the cost of about an hours work on both front doors including parts. Easier than doing it myself especially since those doors are heavy and it would take more than one person.
