New here, fast questions
Hey everyone !
I'd like to ask a few quick questions, I just bought my 02 crew cab back in june, I've already had a few problems with it but still love the truck. My rear diff went out just after warranty ran out, but I made the dealer ship pay for it, and a new set of lower ball joints. Aside from that Its beeen a good affair..till recently, nothing major. I put new tires and wheels on the truck 2 mos ago, and shortly after started hearing a loud wurring noise and figured it was the tires. A frind was riring with aweek later and asked if my four wheel drive was on because the noise bad, I've gotten used to it....any who....I started doing some research, found this forum and learned that its my bearing on the front left side, my go to guy confirmed it. I got the bearing last night and changing it tonight. Is it difficult to change? I'm learning this truck yet so.. Another guy I ran into who has the same truck as mine, says that my wheels are killing my bearings(positive offset). I read though here abit last night and found that alot of you are using wheel spacers? any advice welcome

Wow , that was a mouthful for a first post. Sounds like you are on the right track.
There are some pretty good threads on the whole wheel bearing / rearspacing controversy: Wheel bearings? , Yet another rearspacing debate... , Wheel Spacer Problems.
I would just nod your head and smile, then not worry about your wheels.
If anyone was going to have trouble it would be those of us running 4.5"-4.75" rearspacing on the front shod with 33" tires.
Mine has been doing just fine, and I am over 60k on one stock wheel bearing.
The stock balljoints were redsigned. You may have had the old version. Hopefully you will have no more problems. welcome.

The double caged wheel bearings are prone to failure. The failure rate of stock vehicles is no different from those running other than stock offsets.HenryJ wrote:...I don't buy the excuse that the lack of rear spacing leads to wheel bearing failures. If that were true then ideally the wheel should be centered to reduce the stress? That would mean we need a 7" wide wheel with 3.5" rearspacing. NOT!
The reason we have so much rear spacing is because the axles need to be long enough to have some articulation and the wheels have the heavy rearspacing to reduce the wheels travel radius when turning.
Just don't build them like they used to may be very close to the truth. I have 162k mi. on my old S-10 Sport and haven't had to change a wheel bearing. It is running my old Geolandar M/T's on American Racing Gamblers. They have to be around the 4" rear spacing on 8" wheels.

Spend some time searching for answers. We have tried to accumulate a wealth of information here. I am sad to say that I was unable to find instructions for wheel bearing replacement.
Added the topic: Front hub / wheel bearing assembly replacement.

The problems you have encountered are the exact same the ones I have encountered! I bought mine new in '03 and blew the rear out around 40K (didn't buy the extended waranty either ) I was towing VERY heavy things and had a thing for dogging it in my friends field though. I replaced all my ball joints at 70K. That's ALL I have had to do. Welcome to the forum!

Thanks to all for the welcome and advice. Glad to be on here, a wealth of knowledge is what I need for this truck. I got the wheel bearing replaced last night and man what a differance!!! she's quite again, except now shes got a little hop to her at higher speeds, especially 70mph, after that it goes away. I feell it again when i'm braking to an exit ramp, city driving is fine though, no shakes. So i'm not sure what the problem is

Try rotating your tires and see if it goes away. I would cross rotate first and then to the rear to check for differences.

yeah man, I started to hear loud fast clicking, for fun decided to check the diff and found only trace amounts of oil, ran to store got oil and started to fill it and it started to leak from the input seal!! I was p!ssed, took it back to the dealer, and they said it needed $1100.00 worth of work and seeing that I'm out of the 30day warranty, your on your own!!! I blew up, theres no way I could have destroyd the diff in a month and a half!!! They recomended trading in on a new truck, I lost again and to make a long story short...i got my truck fixed and a rental car for 2 days for only $200! I didnt feel like fighting anymore, so I took my truck and went homeMARBLEYARD wrote:The problems you have encountered are the exact same the ones I have encountered! Yeah, it does sound like you have a tire that is either out of round or improperly balanced.HenryJ wrote:Try rotating your tires and see if it goes away. I would cross rotate first and then to the rear to check for differences.
I've had the same problem before and it happened at exactly the same speed (65 to 75 mph).
Follow HenryJ's advice and isolate the tire that is causing the vibrations.

I assume the left front would be it, cause thats the one that came for the bearing change. And I'm wondering about the pulsing in the wheel and brake pedal, this is my luck, one probem for another...with both of my cars!!!!
Thanks man, Ill print and save for the right bearing next month....The bearings are universals right doesnt matter which side they go on???f9k9 wrote:From USAZR2.COM

fun when your putting on goodies, repair/replace mostly sucks, but I do kinda enjoy itkillian96ss wrote:Sounds like you need to have your rotors turned or get new ones.Lil-j wrote:I'm wondering about the pulsing in the wheel and brake pedal.
If you do get some new rotors or have yours turned it would be a good idea to get new pads as well.
Working on vehicles is fun huh.

It would be awesome if we only had to worry about what mod to do next, unfortunately vehicles and their parts wear out way too fast so we spend more time fixing stuff then putting on the fun stuff.
I know it's possible to make vehicles and their parts last a lot longer, but if manufacturers did this they would lose a lot of money from repeat customers so I believe they intentionally design newer vehicles to last a maximum of 10 years when they could easily make them last 2x as long.

You can buy a vehicle with good parts that lasts forever. Who is willing to pay the price though?
We are all too cheap.

Do you know of a vehicle that lasts forever or were you just speaking theoretically?HenryJ wrote:You can buy a vehicle with good parts that lasts forever. Who is willing to pay the price though?
I would pay a higher price to a certain degree if I knew it would never have any problems.
I would have to think that you could resell it for a good amount of money if the next person in line would also never have any problems.
It all depends how you look at it.

There are vehicles that are very well built and designed to last a very long time. They come with a builders warranty that lasts a lifetime.
Who here is willing to pay a million dollars US for one as a daily driver and with insurance premiums that exceed your mortgage payment? You would not want to be worried about gas mileage either as the weight of this heavier built vehicle would obviously kill the mileage. Horsepower can compensate as can high tech materials. Again the cost goes up.
I can think of a few that would fall into this category. None would really be cost effective unless you plan to live forever.

You mean all that I would have to do for one of these vehicles is sell my house, cars, wife, kids, and everything else I own just for a down payment?HenryJ wrote:Who here is willing to pay a million dollars US for one as a daily driver and with insurance premiums that exceed your mortgage payment?
No problem!
I was kind of thinking more like 2x the price of a normal vehicle would be acceptable.

We are a fast food and disposable society. The majority would be bored with an indestructible lifetime vehicle.
Heck most do not keep the vehicle long enough to pay it off. They see the warranty expiring and bail out.
Where is the incentive to build a better vehicle? We want cheap. Light weight and made to last five years without major problems.
That is what they try to provide. Most go about three without big problems. Warranty will take care of most of that.
Look outside the US to what is going on there. There are vehicles that are extremely dependable, low cost and last forever. Check out the Toyota Hilux Diesel.
Maybe in five years or so we will see a similar vehicle for sale in the US, It took a dozen years just to get a small crewcab for sale here.

I have pics,.....but I'm not techy enough yet to figure out how to post pics. I've been on the forum for my car a few years now, and I have never posted a pic of my car. I lost net access for a couple years so I never figured it out. But i just got the net back so i need to learn soon.BobbleSmitty wrote:Do you have any pictures of your truck??
by the way my other car is a 2001 nissan sentra, I didnt want to buy a foriegn car, but it was cheaper than a compareable chevy/ford etc..., my ex and her parents all had nissans and recomended it. Since i've had it, I've had very little trouble with it....until I started screwing with it, she's still a great car and i'll keep for a good while to come.

I know I wouldn't get bored with a vehicle like that.
I also wish my SS was bullet proof.

You know there is still one out there with your name on it.
Too bad the price of these true beauties is so high these days.
