It is quite a debate (pink or green)

I personally think either is ok, when properly maintained, and changed every 2-3 yrs or 40k.

I had problems with the Dex in my wife's Cavalier convertable after a stuck theromstat over heated it. It turned to the consistency of thick brown muddy river water. :puke:

Here is some information I ran across.

I believe that the auto manufacturers had a good idea trying to build a vehicle that will go 5yrs or 100k with out any service work, but IMO they still need to keep trying ...the Dex. didn't make it.

Green Stuff

Post by Steven »

I did the switch when I got the larger Radiator installed. When taking with the radiator shop, the recommended changing to the Green stuff too. They told me they're getting quite a-few (sent from the local GM dealer) for flushing and switch from the Dex-cool crap. He told me that the Dex Cool is clogging alot of the cars/trucks. Also they told me that if the fluid over heats just once, it changes the properties of it's cooling ability.

That was enough for me to switch.

50/50 is the best compromise.

I would. I had planned on doing it around 3yrs. or 50k.

You can stay with the Dexcool if you would like, and if it has served you well. It does have additional corrosion inhibitors.

If you decide to change to the "Green" be sure that you flush it all out. Take some extra time to flush it several times.

When you refill use distilled (not tap) water and antifreeze.

On the forum for my wife's German car they say prestone has phosphates in it & you need to find a phosphate free coolant like the VW approved coolant. What does anyone know about phosphates & our system? They also say mixing two types can cause a jello effect.

I don't know about the phosphates, but definitely don't mix the Dex-Cool with conventional coolant. It will cause some real problems...jello effect like you said. If you change, definitely flush several times like HenryJ said.

Dex Cool?

Post by Azreloader »

If you leave the pink stuff in too long, it will eat the gaskets. Had to replace every single coolant gasket in my 96 Silverado($1500)

I will probably change mine after it's second Arizona Summer this year.

I know what you mean!

We have five Chevys and two Dodges that ran the Dex-cool in our fleet. I have only two left running the pink stuff, and one of those has to be flushed ASAP. The summer heat and 3yrs old Dex don't mix well. It looks like brownish muck.

I'm going to stick with pink until 75K miles ... that's when my extended warranty runs out ... I don' t want to give them ANY excuse not to fix something :D

I have almost 30K miles and am going to have it completely flushed ... especially since we get plenty of 100+ days in LA. I actually had mine overheat once driving to Vegas when it was new. It was 107 degrees and I was stuck in traffic (construction) and had a passenger that "needed" to have the AC on :!:  The temp slowly went up until the red light came on and I turned the AC off and let it cool down.

You might want to consider the bigger radiator.

I haven't had the fluctuations in temp since I put mine in.

Here are some of the threads:

Water wetter (worth a look too.)

That was a GP buy? I def. don't need cooler temps now but keep me in mind if the GP does happen again.

If I recall correctly. it started out as one but Steven found a better price locally. So I'm the only one who got one here.
