Roll over protection

Post by HenryJ »

Hobie's 4x4 antics have me wondering if it's time to find him a roll bar.

Sweet Veronica is the only crew that I've seen with a bar of any kind.

Personally, I think that something inside the cab would offer the driver more protection. The bed mounted bar just seems to be too far back to be of much help to the driver. Of course it is WAY better than no bar!

Has anyone considered one?

What about the outfit that built your sliders, Hobie?

It would be cool if they would do one for you as a template for the rest of us.

hahaha. i know you take all my mod ideas.

about the roll bar. the bar in the back is a "light bar"...i dont think its too strong or anything.

but if i did, i would build an "exo-cage" and yes it would attach to my sliders like this

i would need a good welder and pipe bender and stuff. which i plan on getting in the next year!

Sterling-Equipment.com offers a roll bar for S-10 Crew Cabs. It's only for floor mount only. I want a rail mount. But could consider the other. JH68

ya, the floor mount, isnt a true "roll bar".

the cheerokee is my favorite off road vehicle. i would get one if i had the money to put into it. but you have to replace so much stock stuff. and the lift kits for those trucks are rather expensive.

and that red one is down right bad ass!!!!!

As usual , I was thinking of something a bit less ...ummm.....complicated.

How would you ever wash that thing?

Forget about driving through the trees and brush too. That would gather a **** load of fire wood. Scratches are one thing, but you wouldn't want to have to limb your truck when you get home

I'd like to see a nicely done interior cage. Something that would save the drivers life, not the life of every body panel.

Image

This would be a start, add another hoop over the rear seat a couple bars up top to tie them together, a couple braces here and there, some reinforcing plates for the floor boards....

As I say this , I'll have to back up a bit.

What about a bar built similar to Justin's then , one hoop attached to the sliders going over the top at the A or B post position with two bars run straight back tieing them together. That would leave a nice place to add a roof rack or mount the spare tire.

Messing with one exterior bar wouldn't be too bad.

And yes Justin's bar may be a "Show" bar or Light bar , but some of that is to cover the manufacturers "tail". I have seen more than one of those cheap chrome show bars be of great help in a rollover. I know of one guy it definately saved his life, when he rolled his Blazer at highway speed.

There's a place here in Phoenix called Extreme Fabrication that does custom interior roll cages. Several guys I know in the local F-Body club have gotten them and are very happy.

If you feel like driving all the way down here for a cage that is...

Veronica's roll bar was custom built by myself and a friend because I didn't want to spend the $600 for the GM roll bar that looks like it is made of 6 mil sheetmetal. The only dissadvantage of having my roll bar is when carrying plywood. I could carry 10+ sheets of plywood and now i can't carry one. I have to trailor it around now...I didn't think of it before I built...DOH!!!

A roll bar attatched to the bed rails is something I plan to do (along with 100 other things

well, like mark said, the int roll bars that he has seen are on f-bodies. havnet seen too many f-bodies on the trail  you need to be able to strap on the roll bars and winch. if they are interior, that will make it quite tuff. for off roading, the exo cage it what i want. :D

OK, so take the funds to be spent on the welder and bender , and go get one while you still have the shiny side up

Have you priced one through Demello (sp?) offroad?

There's a company where I live that could make a roll bar that mounts on top of the bed. I'll check it out. JH68
