biggest tires on stock zr5?

Post by ace »

I've read some people are experiencing some tire rub on the zr5 flares.
Can you get 30's put on without rubbing? Great site by the way. I plan on doing some lift in the near future. I can't decide what to do first, boise spring kit and t-bar crank or the pa bl.

I have the crappy 3.42 gears so it seems as if 30's are the tallest I could go unless I change the gears also.

i was wanting to know the same thing, i dont plan on lifting my truck for about two more years, i am gonna buy a set of rims and tires that i can just mud ride with, not everyday drivers, but i want big boy tires for muddin, whats the biggest tire you can go with on a 15in, 16in, 17in rims, also what size are our tires, not 235/75R15 but like 29x10.50R15, 3.73 gears by the way

I'd say yes on two counts.
One: with the 3.42 gears the optional offroad tires (235/75-15) are really as big as you will want, and still have some performance with a stock engine.
Two: I had them rub slightly under hard articulation, so they are about maximum for size too.
Three: Welcome to THE forum

Now with a little T-bar adjustment and sticking with the stock rear spacing, I could see 30" tires being "do-able"

Same advice as above, but you'll be happier with the performance 29" tires and the 3.73 gears are a nice final ratio. As close to ideal as it gets, IMO.

Once you do a lift you can go to 31's but you'll want to build a little more "zoom zoom" to be happy with the loss of gearing the larger tires bring.

Check out the calculators from the website to convert metric sizes - Axle Ratio/Tire Size Calculator 1.1

I think it was you that said they wanted to get the uswheel daytonas. I believe they have a 4.5" backspace. I just put on similar cragars with 4" backspace and they rub bad with stock tire size. I was able to get them to useable clearance with a T-bar crank and a little "body work".

I have never seen them available.

Have you found some?

The narrowest 31 that I find is 10.5. Even the metric sizes are right there.

There are 33/10.5's

Those are the first that I have seen that narrow in a 31.
Those will work on stock rims with 2" body lift and t-bar crank, maybe a little fender mod since they measure a little larger in diameter and would imagine the side lugs are pretty aggressive.

32's not with out minimum of 6" lift.

Other's may disagree, and probably will. Is it possible to put them on?...yes. Will they rub if I get them on there?...absolutely.

The thing you must realize is that the stock front wheel wells are only 33" and you need to be able to turn the wheels. The rears are about 31".

Having narrower tires is a help, as is retaining the stock rear spacing since the further out you go the larger the arc traveled when turning and wider the wheel well must be.
