Kenwood head unit install issue.

I ordered a kenwood HD radio head unit and front and rear rockford fosgate speakers for my 2001 cc from Crutchfield. They included a wiring harness adapter with the order. After making the connections to the head unit wiring harness, I went to connect it to my cc's wiring harness only to find out that I seem to have the wiring harness in the truck for a 2000.


Just wondering if anyone else had run into this issue.

Bought the correct one from our local best buy and it's in the truck and cranking now!

Keep in mind that the forward wiring harness in the crew cab trucks is the same as the Blazer, not the pick-ups. The rear harness is the same as the trucks.
On the front half order wiring for a utility (Blazer-Crew Cab).

What do you mean front and rear? The speakers? The head unit harness in my crew was the same as all the blazers I have done, except the first gens. First gen have the same looking plug on the stereo end but the truck end has two separate plugs and they are keyed differently. None of the plugs for any of the speakers in my crew matched up with ANY of the speaker wire harnesses that i have bought that supposedly fit these trucks. The rear speakers have the same plug the Blazer has which is reversed from the harness plugs i got, so is the tweeters in the dash. The two front door speakers I dont remember what happened there but I dont recall using a wire harness on them either.

The dash harness for the trucks and the one for the Blazer is completely different, including the radio. Speaker wires are different, serial data different, etc.

The C209 connector for the crew cab and blazer (utilities):

A - RAP fuse supply voltage - DK GRN
B - Backup lamps supply voltage - LT GRN
C - Trip Computer/NAV class 2 serial data - YEL
D - inside air temperature sensor signal (auto AC) - DK GRN
E - Instrument panel lamps fuse supply voltage - GRY
F - Ground - BLK/WHT
G - Outside air temperature sensor signal - LT GRN/BLK
H - Ground - BLK

J - Sensor return (auto AC) - BLK
K - Courtesy lamp supply voltage - ORN
L - Courtesy lamp switch signal - WHT
M - LED dimming signal - PPL/WHT
N - Vehicle speed signal - DK GRN/WHT
P - RAP Fuse supply voltage - DK GRN
R - Battery positive voltage - ORN
S - Ignition 3 voltage - BRN

These are the pin assignments for 2001 pick-ups:

A - not used
B - not used
C - Ground - BLK
D - not used
E - CHMSL Supply voltage - LT BLU
F - Rear speaker output - LT BLU
G - Right rear speaker output - DK BLU
H - Speaker return , Left rear - Yel

J - Left rear speaker output - BRN
K - same as utility
L - Same as utility
M - not used
N - not used
P - not used
R - same as utility
S - not used

There is a thread around here for installing the overhead console with trip computer. Adding the class 2 serial data from the radio is a common trick for the trucks. Not the same for the utility vehicles. This all came to light since the pre-production crew cab conversion trucks have the pick-up harness.

Interesting.... A few of those items i have no idea why they would be going to the radio. Like the backup lamps, inside and outside air temps etc.

The radio wiring for the utilities use a different connector and harness. I was just trying to help you understand that there are some very real differences in the wiring between the utilities and the pick-ups. If you order a kit to connect for a pick-up, don't be surprised if it doesn't work for a crew cab , or Blazer. If you really want to dig deeper into this the GM upfitter manual or the GM service manuals maybe helpful.

I noticed that my haynes manual had the wiring harness using different colored wires for the speakers than those that were actually in the doors. I just cut them, crimped them together and used heat shrink. I didnt figure there was an exact adapter anyway. All the few little issues aside, it was a good investment. sound is great!
