How can I tell if 4x4 is engauged ?
1995 Chev Blazer 4x4 . 3 button . 2hi , 4hi , 4low . Automatic trans .
One of the buttons ( 4lo ) is pushed in and will not return back out of the panel .
The 2hi button is illuminated currently .
The 4hi button , when pressed there is a noise that sounds like it is a normal noise .
But the 4hi button will not illuminated when pressed .
Right now , I am driving with the 2hi button light on and it seems fine . But i am worried that 4 hi is engaged .
How would I tell by driving if it was engaged ?
thanks .

I kind of had this same problem last year with the buttons sticking. I popped out the control panel and cleaned the contacts and buttons with contact cleaner and have not had a problem since.

I tried check for wheel spin , too difficult to do from inside the truck .
I guess I could put a mark with chalk on the transfer case axle and see if it is turning . Or is the axle always turning even when not in 4x4 ? I know it does with a "autotrac" transfer case , but what about with the 3 button case .

Grab the driveline and give it twist. If it is locked the t-case is in 4x4 or the front axle actuator is engaged.
You should feel the front end bind when turning on a solid surface if both are engaged.

thanks , don't know why I didn't think of that .
I grabbed the front driveshaft and i was able to turn it by hand . so the 4x4 was NOT activated . Yeah !
Now on to the next issue ...
Finding a replacement 4x4 button cluster for the dash ( bulbs are out and 4lo button is gone )
