coolant leak

Post by JORSWIFT »

Well, went out to the truck this morning after the truck has been sitting a day and seen the truck leaked coolant behind the the inside or the passengers tire. Any one have any ideas? I just put 2" shackles on be rear and tb crank 8 quarter turns. I thought I had a heal gasket leak when I bought the truck as here is a lot of moisture coming out of tailpipe but dealer told me it was normal and the weather. The radiator is full bug resivoir is low. Please help. Thanks.

Are you still running Dexcool? Check the intake gaskets.
If the top is dry , check the freeze plugs.

Yes. There is still Dexcool in the system. Not sure. Looks pretty dry on top. Im not over heating or anything. And it just happened once. Seems to be dry now, but we had a really hot day.

Intake gaskets have been eaten by the Dex. At least that is very likely. Replace the gaskets with the good FelPro gaskets and refill with green after a good flush.

Read up on the cap. If yours is stock it needs to be replaced too.

Is an intake gasket leak bad? Can I harm things if I dont change right away? I can found a spot where it seems to be wet under the motor. I will have to take a pic as I cannot explain. Looks to be under and near 2 bolts where the motor meets the tranny. But that doesnt mean it is coming from there, could be higher, but not able to see. Is there any tricks to use? I took it to the dealer when I first bought it as this is the second time this has happened and they did a compression test and told me everything was good. But the hoses looked to be old and cracked.

Get a small telescoping inspection mirror and start searching for the leak. Follow the coolant trail!

I am hoping it is just the over flow or a line. Man hate to have to tear into it. But where the over flow line is, it couldnt reach where the spot is.

Feel around the back by the base of the distributor. You'll probably find wet.
It is not too bad a job. That walkthrough is a good one.

Felt around the back and by the distributor cap and it was wet. I looked to and could see the coolant. Will it be ok to drive the truck until I can get it changed?

Not really. The problem is that it may not only be leaking externally, but it is very likely that is leaking into the engine as well.
I really pissed a guy off the last time I went on this sort of "rant". Please take no offense, but the truck will :loser:

Coolant is very hard on bearings and yours is no spring chicken. Add to that the fact that air contaminates Dex and it tends to gel and cause all sorts of problems in the heater core. That is no fun a task to deal with either.
Park it until you can fix it. Continuing to drive it is testing fate and my luck is just not THAT good.

Glad you took HJ advise on it. I have seen many people put it off and pay for it later.
