Transmission filter replacement problems
Stupid question, do you have to remove the transmission cross member to remove the pan and filter? I have every bolt out of the pan and cannot find a way to get it out past the cross member.

I do not think you do but, I have heard it is quire a puzzle. I know that damage can be done if, forced. I have no personal experience but, I did read about it here.

I finally got it out. I was going to remove the cross member until I realized that I would need to remove my passenger side step bar (ZR5) to get at the head of the bolt. I ended up taking the nuts off of the transmission mount and gently raising the transmission until I was able to get the pan out. What were they thinking

As you have found the pan does come off. The crossmember does not have to be removed. It is much like a Chinese puzzle in that it will only come off one way.
Don't force it and for heavens sake don't use a pry bar. The solenoids on the back of the valve body can be easily damaged.
Use finesse and patience.
