Powertrax Lock-Right
My father-in-law just traded in his S-10 Crew Cab for a black 2004 GMC 2500HD SLT 4x4 Crew Cab w/ the Duramax (sigh).
Hello? Can I have your attention again? Thank you. He had a Powertrax Lock-Right for the front diff of his S-10, but never installed it.

He just gave it to me. Should I use it? I know I'd have it installed becasue I know I'm not going to mess with that stupid front diff! I know front lockers are usually a no-no on streetable vehicles. Check it out and tell me what you think. Would it be easier during turning than some other locking units? Does in make a difference if I'm not in 4Hi? Thanks.

front lockers are okay for street rigs. esp if they are selectable. front locker are a NO-NO on s-10's for all applications
600 dollars for the install and the poooof your front diff will explode

Even with smaller than stock tire sizeNTXCrew wrote:even with stock tire size?
The stock 7.25" front diff just won't handle the pressure of a locker.
The PowerTrax Lockright is especially harsh too.
Are you really sure He had one for a 7.25" carrier?
I have one for a 7.5" carrier w/28 spline side gears. They are fairly common.
It totally destroyed the dampening springs in the clutch on my old truck. It did really do well offroad , but I would NOT use one again for a streetable vehicle.

I am not a fan of these lockers.
I had the Lockright (powertrax) in my old S-10.
The one I had , I believe is still being used by the person I sold it to.
For offroad they are outstanding. It is the daily driven street duty that takes the toll.
Both the richmond Powertrax and the lockright Powertrax are the same style and function. I would use neither. Even a detroit locker is less harsh, and many times more predictable on the street.
The springs on mine broke at some point. The pieces were there, but I would imagine in time damage could have been done.LS1 Mike wrote:And we take a number of these broken POS units out of axles. Usually when they break it takes the ring gear and pinion, and if you are really lucky it breaks the housing as well.LEROY wrote: I have a powertrax lock-rite in my 81 malibu making around 440 hp and I broke the ring gear before the stock carrier,I think its rated for about 900 hp or so,it was around $300 bucks i think its been about 5 years since I got it.
We have done 2 Jeeps in the last month that have had these lockers. Both required new housings when the unit broke, and spit the little springs out. The spring gets caught between the ring and pinion, then breaks the bearing cap.
