Paint coming off frame

Post by Noma02 »

The paint (or powder coating) not sure which it is, is starting to come off the frame of the truck all the way around. My question is, should I be worried or is it ok. (sounds like a dumb question huh) I was thinking about taking it in to the dealer. It's still under warranty for 3 more years.

Anything I could do to fix the problem?

Lots of people take the frames out from under their trucks and paint it. I live way up north in the salt and my frame is all rust and has been for years. Never a problem with it! Personally I wouldn't worry anything about that but thats just me. Down south they might worry about rust more. Up here its useless to try to stop it...

Take it to the dealer and see what they will do for you. It's under warranty so why fuss unless they give you some funky loaner to drive

The frame is not painted on mine. It is a waxy coating. It doesn't hold up really well.
Unless you paid for an undercoating protection, I doubt there is anything that will be done. It is your responsibility to prevent the corrosion.

Buy some POR 15 or just some spray cans of black rustoleum and paint it yourself. I did that with mine and it has held up great through the snowy winters and all of the salt on the road.

But, why not see what the dealer will do? It's Free after all.

I would think that if the anti-corrosion coating is flaking off the frame it would possibly come under the "corrosion" warranty, which if I remember 1/2 assed correctly (hey I'm a semi-old fart so I get some breaks) is 5-6 years or 100,000 miles, and it would be in the dealers best interest to repair it to ward off or at least delay any problems until it's out of warranty. It could be something as minor as putting it up on a lift, steam cleaning it (heating it up and softening it, scraping off the flaking stuff) and then re-applying whatever GM put on there in the 1st place. :? :?

But then maybe I'm daydreaming in a fantasy world....AGAIN!

Aren't the frames dipped from the factory? I am pretty sure that is the process. What is it going to hurt if it rusts? It would be a very long time before it would weaken or compromise the chassis. The corrosion policy applies to body parts, not the chassis. That would be an additional purchased application and policy I would think. Kind of the old "Simoniz undercoating thing".

Thanks for all the advice. I'm in Ga so not much salt on the roads during winter, LOL. I think I might run her in to get checked out, if they give me the run around then I'll just do it myself.

Thanks!
