Installing a track bar?

Post by Batass »

Is it possible to install a track bar on the rear end? My truck sways a good bit side to side and more when I tow. I think it would be easy to fab up some mounts, has anyone done this?

Jim has installed a rear sway bar. Are you running stock shocks? If so, dump them fast and try an alternative.

A track bar and a sway bar are completely different and do different things. :?

A track bar like the ZR2 pick ups have are only for locating the rear end which prevents side to side movement while still allowing the suspension to flex.

A sway bar is used for controlling rear end sway by keeping the vehicle more vertical and in the process reduces suspension flex.

Are you looking to reduce sway or just side to side movement?

Both will reduce side to side movement but with different ways with different results.

A sway bar might help, but Im talking about side to side movement. Going over certain bumps and turns the rear slides around. Could be worn leaf spring bushings, but regardless, it shouldve been standard equipment. Also when im towing it pushes the rear around.

Are the shackles and leaf springs stock?

If you were to install some urethane bushings on the front spring eye (spring to frame) and upper/lower shackle you would reduce a lot of that side to side movement without affecting articulation much.

The other option would be to find a track bar off a 94 and up ZR2 pickup and weld it to the frame and axel.

i agree about not needing a trac bar. are you sure you dont have some other problem? i would say 90 percent of vehicles that are leaf sprung have no trac bar.
