Does anybody use Mickey Thompson tires?

Post by GAS »

Wanted a little peace of advice.
I decided to change stock GOODYEAR Wrangler RT/S 235/75/15 to 30x9.5-15 Geolandar G011 or BFG ATR or Mickey Thompson MTX and I don’t now which to prefer. Thay all in the same price (+/-), who knows which tire is better to drive the highway and sometimes around it?
What the difference between them in general?
Give me please your opinions of such change (I am staying on stock N90 wheels without any lift).

I'm positive that I'm bias towards the BFG's, as I've never used the Mickey Thompsons, or the Geolanders. IMO the BFG AT's are a 200% improvement over the stock badyears. :)

Brule (HenryJ) or Reed (F9K9) have both owned BFG's and Geolanders, and should be able to give a good comparision between the two. As for the MT's, here's what I've heard (keyword here: HEARD--never owned them myself): They're excellent performing tires, but not that great on road. Take that for what it's worth.

You're asking someone that went thru a 6 month battle to get 2 bad out of five BFG AT/KOs replaced from local dealers that I purchased from Summit.?

BFG/Michelin customer service is first class though!

If, Yoko has your size, I recommend them. If your local BFG dealer wants 10 bucks more than Summit buy them local. Not much on even the Jeep forums om M Thompson tires. He was a hero to auto buffs 30 yrs ago but, I had some work down last yr at a place and while staying out of the shop (per insurance regs) I found some empty wheel boxes out back and there was my "turn off" printed right on them! "Made IN China"!

From what I have heard the US domestic cases (MickeyT) run true to size. 30"=30".
The US import cases tend to run smaller. 30"=29"

I rubbed with the stock optional offroad tires. 235/75-15 is the optional oversized offroad tire. Stock tires are the smaller 235/70-15.
If you plan to remain at stock height 30" tires will be pushing it.
If they run true to size you could have rubbing issues.

I am a big fan of the Yokohama Geolandar AT+II. They are a great bang for the buck. Next would be the BFG AT/KO.

Of the three the BFG will likely offer the best mileage. They do last well and wear evenly. The Geolandars may wear a bit unevenly. They are an aggressive tire though.

All three are worthy choices. I don't think you will be displeased with any of them. Weight the prices and available service, then make your decision.

What do they cost in Russia? Are there other brands available that might be a good option?

I have the mickey thompson MTX's. They are awesome in the mud and snow. They have a little howl on the highway but not bad at all. I driven in a lot of rain and they haven't hydroplaned or anything. I've gotten a lot of compliments on my tires. They look great in person. As far as size my 31"s were exactly 30". This is actually one of the reasons I got them. I have the 3.42 gears and I didn't want to rob too much power but I wanted the width of a 31 x 10.50. I had to make a cut in the corner of the fender on the driver side but no biggie. I do have the bodylift and I did crank my t-bars for an extra inch.

So maybe the radials use a US import case as well?
Good to know they run small too.

Best bet is to check actual dimensions in the specifications. Tire Rack is a good place to browse.
Yokohama-29.5"
BFGoodrich-29.5"
MT-29.0"

Looks like they do run small. Other sizes may vary though. It is always best to check each for yourself.

Tread design and the shoulder should also be another thing to consider. All of these have a squared shoulder design. Those with a rounded shoulder offer more clearance.

I don't want to steer you wrong in your tire selection. When I specifically chose the MTX's was because I wanted an all terrain tire that could spit out mud. I knew mud was going to be on my menu. I read somewhere that the BFG all terrains are only fair in mud. If I didn't care about that then I would of probably went with the BFG AT's because of the mileage they are known to go. I would say the MTX's are somewhere between a mud terrain and all terrain.

Thanks guys for your answers.
I did not know that is such interesting object for discussion. I see everyone recommend tires he drive and as I understand all those three are about equal.
The problem is I drive my S10 ones or twice in month when I need to go 350 miles to next region where I bought some peace of land to build a house. Biggest part of this trip is on highway but the final 5 miles is the sand road – shaky when dry and slippery when whetted. From other hand, everybody around me uses BFGs or Yokohamas or Coopers and I thought it might be great if I will drive Mickey Thompson one in the city (may be one of five).
In my own city there are a lot of brands offers 4x4 tires – Cooper, Yoko, BFG, Michelin, Fulda, Toyo and others but 30x9.5 is very very rare size most of dialers offers 31x10.5 and bigger. I hardly find that tree.
As for prices in Russia – 30x9.5 BFG $160, MT $152, Geolander between them.

For sand be sure to read the artile on airing down - Tire pressures and airing down for offroad and maybe think about picking up a 12 volt air compressor

Back to tires. It is not a bad idea to follow what others are using locally. They may know what works.

Best of luck with your decision. Be sure to let us know what you decide.

Believe or not.
Past weekend I finally got Mickey Thompson MTX 30x9.5-15 on my truck. On Sunday I had couple city miles and first thought was “How noisily are these tires!” because was a really big difference even after my winter Cooper Whether Master. Some strange thing – when I step on brakes, noise is gone until truck almost stops. I don’t know why that so, may be because the tires are new?
In spite of that, truck looks much better now and common impression is good. I hope tire noise will get quieter in time or Ill take it as ordinarily sound.
P.S. How can I add some pictures here?
