My transfer case broke! We had a couple of wicked blizzards here in CO, so been using 4WD a lot. (Found out I really need a locker, but that's another story). On New Years Eve I backed out of the garage and hit the button for 4Hi. but no 4 wheel drive for a second, then Bang! and there's the sound like bolts in a dryer.
From the way it sounds, the transfer case chain is busted (at a minimum). I'll remove the case in the next day or two & have a look inside.
Question: Is it worth it to rebuild the NP 233 transfer case? Or would it make more sense to replace it with one from the junkyard? (I located one from a '97 for $200) Has this happened to you?

Yea, I second that, they are not bad from a Junkyard and depending on what snapped, the a np231 can be had cheaper and most parts are interchangable. That's kinda amazing. I also know someone at my work with a ZR2 that his chain started slap'n and making racket, they charged like $600 or more to fix it. And he never uses his 4wheel drive!!! I wonder if there are lemon np233's out there. I use mine allot and have 92k on it, no prob (knock on wood). Drove all day at the OBX beaches and was no prob last weekend. Also had it apart not long ago to do a fixed front output conversion and showed no real wear, cleaned the filter screen, new oil and good to go. Although I did change the oil about the same time I change the tranny oil about every 40k miles, so maybe this helps?

Finally got around to messing with the truck and I found out it wasn't the transfer case at all, the front driveshaft broke! When I looked under the truck & saw the shaft not rotating along with the clunking and grinding noises, I naturally assumed the transfer case was the problem. Upon closer inspection, one end was rotating and the other was not! The CV joint in the shaft broke.
Went to the junkyard & the guy gave me one for free. Now I gotta return the transfer case he sold me.

I see ones with lifts are starting to break now. I still have my modded one from Tom Woods that is perfect for IFS lifted vehicles. The lenth may need shorted, that's it. Seems no one is interested in a great deal???? $25???? I offered it to another lifted crew that brok, but I still see no interest. It's better to pay $300-400 for it?

Yea, but nobody seems to want it. I wonder what these people are replacing their busted one with??? It's not good for a SFA (because of the angle), but just perfect for an IFS lift. The ujoints are still in excellent condition, there is nothing wrong with this shaft. My wife is just tired of seeing it leaning against the wall.
If ya want, take a measurement like at the bottom of this chart and let me know, then I can tell you for sure weather it will need shortened, cause I'm really not sure. Most machine shops can do the work easily.

I am still waiting on my XJ. The kid's Dad misplaced the title and that may take a week or two. I was merely trying to bump your thread. I don't think that I will need it. That is so cheap it is not even funny! They may be like me and never heard of Tom Woods until I had been on the forums for a couple of years. Now, if Tom Woods made bazookas, I bet that there would be more of an interest

Well, i was talking about "ZR5OnIt", and another guy in this forum somewhere that said his front shaft also busted. This shaft will only work with a stock NP233 output. I've since converted my NP233 front output to the same as an NP231, so it wont' work with an NP231 unless the tcase side is modded. This shaft I am selling has a custom slip-on flange, just like stock, so it slips on with the snap-ring on the front output of an NP233.
