fuel pump noise, and fuel filter replacement...

Post by crew cab sonoma »

every time i have replaced the fuel filter on the Crew Cab, ive noticed that the fuel pump was noticeably quieter afterward, but i just replaced the fuel filter on my recently accuired Ext. Cab last night.
the fuel pump was quite loud since i got the truck, but after installing the new fuel filter, the pump noise is now LESS THAN HALF of what it was before...

the old filter on my truck was an AC Delco, and i suspect it might be the original...
at nearly 62K miles, it has gone more than twice its recomended service life.

so if your fuel pump seems to be too loud, and your fuel filter is about due, or overdue for replacement, you just might be surprised just how much quieter a new filter will make things...

another thing i noticed while leting the truck run, and checking the new filter for leaks, was how warm the fuel line and filter got after only a few minutes of running. easily a 30+ deg. F rise over ambient temp. even when everything else was still cool, including bottom of the fuel tank.

i know the fuel pump cools itself with the fuel passing through it, but i just never realized just how much heat it generates....
more study of this will be done in the near future...

Good tip! It does make sense, but I never really payed any attention to that. I will now though. Thanks!

I probably change them a little more frequently than most. In bad conditions they get changed every 15K. Best conditions they usually never go 30k.

yeah, me too. but its amazing how many people will change their oil religiously, but either put off, or completely neglect other servicing, such as the fuel filter...

the fuel filter is mounted to the inside of the driver side of the frame, right next to the transfer case.

trust me, its not hard to hear them when they get loud. its easy to just get used to hearing it, and think its normal.

as for your ign. components, your plugs are supposed to good til 100K, and my owers manual say that the plug wires are to be "inspected" at that time as well. no mention of replacing them, and no mention of the cap/rotor at all....

The spark plugs, spark plug wires, 02 sensors, and cap & rotor can go until 100k, but they will be in bad shape by then. If you wait until 100k to replace any of this stuff you will have most likely been wasting money on gas since your mpg and performance will have been dropping since 70k miles or so. :( I replace my spark plugs and 02 sensors around 60k-70k miles (AC Delco plugs & AC Delco 02 sensors) and inspect my spark plug wires and cap and rotor around the same time and replace them if needed.

My schedule for other maintenance items are:

Engine oil & filter every 4k-5k miles (Mobil 1 synthetic and K&N oil filter)
Transmission filter & fluid every 30k miles (AC Delco filter & Castrol ATF)
Fuel filter every 20k miles (AC Delco filter)
Rear differential fluid every 30k miles (Redline synthetic)
Front differential and t-case fluid every 60k miles (Redline synthetic)
Fuel injector cleaner every 3k miles (Redline, Lucas, Gumout, STP, etc)
Front suspension grease fittings every 4k-5k (Mobil synthetic chassis grease)
Tire rotation every 4k-5k miles (I got 50k out of my last set of MT/R's)
Clean the MAF and IAT sensors every 4k-5k miles (CRC MAF cleaner)
Throttle body every 4k-5k miles (Valvoline synthetic TB cleaner)

This may seem way overkill to most of you guys, but I like to keep my vehicles running at peak efficiency and I also plan on keeping my CC for a long time. :D

Well, I went ahead and finally replaced the fuel filter. ????Wonder if I can stretch this one for 75K, like the original???? j/k
And yes, it was the origanl fuel filter....It even had the overspray from the undercoating.

some of it does kinda sound overkill, but most of it is within reason.

i kind of got a chuckle out of "Valvoline SYNTHETIC TB cleaner"....
and couldnt help but think how well their "natural" tb cleaner works...
Valvoline gets kinda carried away with the "synthetic" labels on their products....

I've got to admit that sometimes I get so wrapped up in synthetic technology that I buy stuff that probably isn't any better than the regular stuff as in this case with the Valvoline synthetic TB cleaner. It does work very well, but probably no better than the regular stuff.

Don't feel bad, My ex called me "Inspector Gadget"

She'd tell company to ask me if, I had a particular piece of equipment in my g-ride. they'd ask me and chances were, I could produce it inside of 2 minutes. For an old geezer I love technology

 There is nothing wrong with having too much technology. Remember that asian kid in the movie Goonies? His gadgets saved their butts several times. You just never know what life is going to throw at you! I would rather be "Inspector Gadget" and be prepared for anything rather than being SOL.
