From alternators , AC to the roof...

Post by F9K9 »

Had to split the topic again. This was headed way off topic-HJ

Thanks for updating this subjectImage

This "WAS" my mod but, unfortunately I had another duck go underImage

My heat pump died today and it's already 80° outside! Naturally it's a weekend, as well :bonk:

I guess I should have stated that I was adding my new roof when I heard the compressor try to start and locked up. I heard the fan try to engage but, couldn't. I was able to get the fan going with a little water hose action to get it spinning. I wonder what the odds are on both going at once. :bonk:

I know it was much warmer in AZ than it was here today. That attic had to be a killer!

Not quite your best location of splitting a topic but, can't say it caught me by surprise, Brule :D

I tried to leave your post with that thread, but first I tried to drag it off topic. I split that to the AC thread. Then Borderman comes in and away we go again.
It was your post that was the instigator here, Rusty ;)
Bad cut or not I had to move it. That thread is pretty hard to read as it is. Bogging it down with roofing and air conditioners was not helping matters

Sorry. Just trying to keep things useful :mg:

Check the high voltage contact relay inside the unit. it may be dirty and you might not be getting 240 volts to the unit. Half of the 240 breaker could be kick out or you could have a bad start capacitor. The compressor has two windings in it one for start and one for run. If the compressor is pulling a lot of amps trying to start this would cut down the voltage needed to start the fan.

Thanks, I looked at it but, I cannot even determine which breaker is for the unit. Hopefully, the repair people won't be backed up to bad this week. I guess I am paying the price for living in government rental locations all my career and not having to DIY that comes with being a homeowner. :!:

Got a window unit as a back-up?

Nope! Am trying to hold off buying one to see what the damage is on the Heat pump. I figure, I'll have better luck finding a deal when I don't need one. I may have to get a small window unit for the bedroom so, Ms Hoff can get some sleep when she get's home tomorrow morning.

That is exactly what I have in the garage waiting. It is nice to have an emergency cooling unit. I came home to a bad AC situation once. 86 degrees inside is not comfortable sleeping :!:

It's higher than that inside now but, will cool off at dark. I did read in a federal computer rag "GCN" that hard drives double their rate of failure for every increase of 10 degrees.

I did manage to grow up w/o ac and the humidity was a little higher in SE Asia from what I recall. I have no room to gripe. 113 degrees is forecasted for Bagdad tomorrow. That body armor looks killer compared to what we had and we often went without. It has to be brutal there!

Reed, the rule isn't quite the same for processors, but it's the same general idea. :)

Well, I never said I was literate with computers. We do have over a hundred cameras at work that record on 16 hard drives and until I convinced them to add a heat pump to the computer room, we lost 4 hard drives ( The wise gov't turns off all heating and cooling at night and weekends regardless of outside temps) Don't know exactly why I brought it all that up but, with my heat pump unit out there are other ducks being drawn to a large whirl pool that seems to be my norm.

Well, I knew I should have opened the side panel of the outside unit but, I didn't. The starting capacitor had a crimp-on lead broken! Almost 5 days of misery and the purchase of a window ac unit to help Mrs Hoff sleep during the day and I could have fixed it last SA :bonk: I have a ton of connectors from the LS-1 fan install, the MSD 6 AL install and redoing all my relays that would have worked.

I have learned a lot from this site and you guys, thanks! :D

I learned how to replace circuit breakers in the house and many other home owner "mods". Doesn't hurt to ask anything in the NOS section. Someone can help you out or point you in the right direction for non CC related topics.

Thanks again, Brule

BTW......I donated my friggin' ducks to DUCKS UNLIMITED

Glad you learned a little and will be able to "take a look" next time. That window unit will come in handy again someday, I am sure. Not a bad investment.

It really is wonderful the support people here offer. Sometimes a little reassurance is all we need to help us grow.
