My fuel pump is making some noise , I am afraid of it failing at anytime now .
So.... I have seen In-line Fuel pumps at some stores , and was wondering if they will work on our trucks ?
Is the stock pump a in-line type pump ? or is it in the tank ?
Which capacity/flow rate should i be looking for ?
I would like to either replace the stock pump with the inline one , or put the inline pump on and disable it until the stock pump fails . Am I crazy , or is this doable ?

I don't know enough about how our pumps are designed to say for sure, but I have tried this on an in tank ford pump and we couldn't suck through the bad pump. We temporarily ran a hose into the tank separate from the 'bad' fuel pump (this involved a drill bit, and electirc drill, and a half full gas tank. Not a recommended procedure. ) the engine ran fine. So, we just gave up and replaced the in tank one.
That being said, the fuel pumps on both my 97 S-10 and my 02 crew have been loud from day one. I think it’s just the nature of the beast.

Blaze One, is it a whining noise? Kinda loud? If so, that's pretty common on alot of S series vehicles. My CC does it, and my 00 Sonoma did it.Blaze One wrote:My fuel pump is making some noise , I am afraid of it failing at anytime now .

yep it is a whinning noise , I posted a topic about it before , and was told that it was semi-normal .
Ok what if i re phrase the question .
IF and When my fuel pump goes , can i replace it with a In-line pump ? assuming the stock pump is a in-line type , is it ?
I have heard that replacing fuel pumps in tanks can be very pricey , and would like to research a alternative before hand .

Replace the in tank fuel pump when it goes. I have not seen an external pump that will provide the pressure needed and be affordable. Those cheap inline pumps won't develop 60-65 psi. There may be a way to replace only the pump, but usually the fuel gauge sender is worn and in need of replacement as well. It is best to just replace the whole assembly.
Part of the problem is that the gasoline is the cooling system for the pump. Don't run below 1/4 tank during the summer. You will be reducing the available coolant.
Worry when the pump doesn't make noise. If you run more on the top half of the tank you will notice less noise and it will be better on the pump.
