Axles swap for my truck
We just had an old beater 79 F250 4x4 traded in here and I was wondering if you guys thought the axles would work on an S-10. Would it absolutely have to be narrowed or could I make them work?

Way back when I was going to SFA the first Blazer I had, I went out and bought full sized Bronco axles (same as F-150). I'm not sure if they are the same width as F-250 axles but I was going to run 35's and I figured with "standard offset" wheels, the tires would stick out about 3" on each side past the 3" flares I was going to install. The axles are that much wider. There are a lot of guys on S-10Extremist running similar setups. I didn't think it would look that bad but the guys with the little blue lights on their cars might disagree.
Here is a similar setup to what I was going to run:

Just wondering because I measured outside of wheel to outside of wheel and the rear was the same as mine and the front was 2" wider overall on the F250. They're wanting $1500 for the truck...and it's a rusty POS. I told them $500. We'll see what happens.

Hmmm, Interesting. I "test fitted" the dana 44 front I have and it was way wider than stock S-10. The Ford 9" was pretty wide too. I still have those axles sitting in my shed. I can't decide what to do with them.AZS10Crew wrote:Just wondering because I measured outside of wheel to outside of wheel and the rear was the same as mine and the front was 2" wider overall on the F250. That measurement was a little off because it was outside to outside. When I measured brake to brake, it was about a 4" difference overall. Still not as much as I thought though. We'll see if they get anyone to pay $1500 for it. Heck...at the worst I could sell a decent D60 rear and a decent D44 front for a few bucks if I part it out.

no, those are perfect. remeber, the taller you go the wider you need to go to be safe...its always a compromise, but those are perfect axels for your rig.

Cool...the only issue now is how much they'll take for the truck. I told them $700 was the most I would spend, so we'll see. The general manager seems to think that truck is worth it's weight in gold and that he'll get $1500 no problem. It's a rusty POS with wood bedsides, so hopefully I'll get a deal.a2b wrote:no, those are perfect. remeber, the taller you go the wider you need to go to be safe...its always a compromise, but those are perfect axels for your rig.

I agree that the higher, the wider is best. I was speaking from a legality viewpoint. I probably should have said that up front. Here in VA, I wouldn't get 10 miles down the road before I got pulled over for tires sticking out like that. They didn't used to care but are starting to crack down hard on things like jacked up 4x4's. I don't know how they are where you live though.

That was one of the reasons (among many others) that made me change my mind on the Blazer project. The one I have now I'm going to do cut-out flares (good way to hide the rust around the wheel openings ) and 31's and call it a day. Since it spends 99% of it's time on the street as my daily driver, I just can't justify SFA anymore.jeff024 wrote:same here in Maryland if they can pour water down the fender and it runs down the tire you arent legalRusty wrote:I agree that the higher, the wider is best. They're a little more lenient here in Indiana with the tires sticking outside the fenders. Besides...it's a small town and we know almost everyone, including the city and county cops, so things should be OK.
Still waiting for that price to come down though.

In that case I'd say go for it!AZS10Crew wrote:They're a little more lenient here in Indiana with the tires sticking outside the fenders. Besides...it's a small town and we know almost everyone, including the city and county cops, so things should be OK.
