NO HEAT - HVAC *solved ( Dex clog )

Post by kwalsh »

I'm very upset about this, considering it is winter.

Facts:
1. Recent "Gurgling"
2. Fan Blower works at all speeds.
3. Running Dex
4. Cold Air out of vents with thermostat at Hot.

Does this mean the dreaded Heater Core Fix is required?

I would say either the heater core is blocked/plugged or you have a lot of air trapped in the system which would be bad if you are still running Dex-Cool. :( Has the engine been running at a normal temerature lately?

Engine temps are normal.
During idle I have a little warm air out of the vents.
I haven't smelled any coolant in the cab or found any leaks.

It's kind of weird, I never heard this gurgling until 2 days ago & then....this problem occurred "overnight".

I hope it is plugged & a good air blow/ flush will clear it out.

Once you fix the problem I would suggest going GREEN to prevent future problems like this. DEX is no good!

I would bet this is low coolant. This is the exact problem I had with my crew at 30,000 with a pin hole leak in the radiator. At idle the water pump doesn't have enough kick to push water up into the heater core when the level is low and there is air in the system. So you come to a stop light, you have warm air for 10 seconds until you cool the water in the heater core... then nothing until you get the RPM's up again.

I flushed the system....a lot of nasty looking crap came out of the lines.
The DexCool had turned into a dark/rusty orange color. It didn't look very good.

I decided since I was going to be adding the Green, I might as well upgrade to the larger capacity radiator the HenryJ has referenced on the Mod page.

I'm a happy & warm Chevy driver now.

Congrats! Glad you solved your problem. Keep an eye on the green for a little while to make sure there are no problems with residual Dex.
