My Service Engine Soon light just came on the other day. I took it up to the local parts store for them to check it out. They told me that I needed an O2 sensor on the passenger side before the Cat. Conv. A new O2 sensor runs about $100 give or take a little. I was about to get one from the General Motors Special Parts Operation due to me being a GM employee. I saved over $60. But now that I have the sensor I need to know which one it is and how is the best way to access the "front passenger O2 sensor." I know this is the best place to get that info. So I'll return to the forum in a couple of hours to see what ya'll think. I you can post pictures too, it may make it easier for me.
Ya I know, I work for General Motors, at an assembly plant none the less, but don't know much about automobiles. Heck I drive a Fork Lift for heavens sake.
O2 Sensor needs replacing

Hopefully they said Bank 2 sensor 1 is the one that needed to be replaced.
First thing first. The heated 02 sensors don't have the failure rates that the old unheated sensors had. I would suggest clearing the code , either with a scan tool or by disconnecting the battery.
See if the code returns. Meanwhile check the connection and wires for damage.
The sensor screws into the exhaust pipe. I believe it is a 7/8" wrench that will fit them. They are numbered from the front. Bank 1 is the side on which the #1 cylinder resides, and is the drivers side. Bank 2 is the passenger side.
These sensors should go 100k mi. pretty well although performance may degrade. If you knocked one out with a bad batch of fuel, a bad cylinder flooded it, or it just plain failed and the MIL shows up again ...then , I guess replacement is the next step.
Crawl underneath and look up to the exhaust manifold. follow the pipe down and you will see the first sensor that screws into the pipe. It will have several wires coming out of the end. Unplug the connector. You have to pull the little blue safety out then raise the locking clip. Now unscrew it from the pipe.
The new sensor should have some antisieze compound on the threads. If not carefully apply some . Avoid getting this on the sensor. Snug it up and reattach the connector.
Disconnect the battery so that the computer will reset itself.
I have had one of mine set a code twice. The first time I forgot to connect the wiring after removing the precat. Plugging it back in cleared that up. The second time I don't know what happened. I reset the PCM cleared the code and it never reocurred.

thank you for the welcome even though ive been around for a while just on hiatis. changed the o2 sensor was a breeze. after i found the dang thing and a way to get a o2 sensor socket with ratchet on it. disconnected the battery for a couple of hours then hooked it back up and was ready to roll, w/o the CES light.
