A Better Coil

Post by killian96ss »

Our stock coil is rated @ 38,000 volts which isn't bad, but I wanted more so I chose the Accel coil which is rated @ 48,000 volts. This is a 7% increase in voltage and an 11% increase in energy. Another option is MSD, but their coil is only rated @ 40,000 volts which isn't much more, and the MSD coils are not made nearly as nice as the factory or Accel coils. If anyone is interested I got mine from Summit part # ACC-140024 $41.95.

You probably won't notice much of a hp increase, but it will help burn the gas more completely which should give you a little better gas mileage and a smoother running engine. You would also now have a second coil for backup in case one should fail when your deep off road. Brule has a nice setup that mounts the second coil next to the other one for this same scenario. If you combine this with an ignition box like MSD or Accel then you would notice slight power increase. :) I have this same coil on my SS with an MSD digital 6 ignition and I picked up 13 hp when I dynoed it. 8)

According to Summit, this part will fit up to the 2001 model year vehicles... does anyone know what changed between 2001 and 2002 model years that would make the coil not compatible with the 2002's?

The catalog's application years have not been updated, or the CARB compliance certificates have not yet been obtained.
