17x9" Firebird rims on a 4x4, what tire size?
I've been scanning E-bay and I really like the 5-spoke WS6 Firebird wheels. They are 17x9" and I'm wondering on the tire size. Stock on the Jimmy is 235/75/15 so in order to keep close on the diameter, 235/65/17 would be the size I need. I'm concerned about 235/65/17 being wide enough for the 9" rim? My other option is 255/60/17 but my tire choices in this size suck and I'm concerned about rubbing.
Ideas?
Thanks,
Steve

Stock rim width on your Jimmy is only 7" though. I'd go with the 255's at least...maybe as wide as 275's, but then you'd need lower profile. Try playing around on www.tirerack.com to see what's available.

I started here figuring sizes, http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html then went to Tirerack.com to see what was available.
It looks like a 275/55/17 would be close in height to stock but wider. Rubbing might become an issue though.

Depends on the backspacing of the Firebird rims. If they've got 6", you should be OK. Anything more or less than that could cause frame or wheel well rubbing issues.

I believe the F-body rims have the same offset/backspace as stock S-series rims. I know they'll bolt right on. There's a guy here with them on his crew.AZS10Crew wrote:Depends on the backspacing of the Firebird rims. If they've got 6", you should be OK. I couldn't afford the 17" tires and 9.5" wide wheels with 4x4... tire wear would be a problem.
I run Camaro 16" ZR1 wheels for summer the Pontiac wheels are for winter.

Jim, I was thinking you had 17's for some reason. Thanks for clearing it up!

I checked the tire size calculator and the 245/65's would make the speedometer 2.3% slow which isn't too bad.
Thanks!

I just checked tirerack and there are many good tires in that size. I prefer the Dueler Revos but they don't come in that size
These are available though which are pretty close to the Revos

I would never buy Goodyears personally but I've owned many Firstones and some Bridgestones and have never had a problem.
The Stock Goodyear RT/S have a crappy tread pattern which is why I don't like them.
