K&N drop-in
So, Melloyellow... Notice any difference running the K&N "drop-in" filter?
Mileage? Preformance? anything?
(don't let the quick-lube throw it away , it is a lifetime filter)

I have one of the drop-ins in my other car ('89 Lincoln LSC 5.0HO).. Dont know if it changed the mileage any, but it definetly helped the airflow into the high output 5.0 engine.. Thats the only mod I have on the power train on the car.. And its nice only cleaning it about once a year.. It says every 100,000miles, but I usually clean it every spring (the car only has a total of 106,000 total.. maybe 20k of that with the K&N in it).Pauleo wrote:Hmm. When I put mine in, I noticed the idle RPM went down and the engine made a much cooler sound when I stepped on the gas! But as for gas mileage, I didn't notice any difference.
I'm thinking about going the full cold-air-intake kit on the S10..

Clean it? You mean you're supposed to clean it?kf6kmx wrote:And its nice only cleaning it about once a year.. It says every 100,000miles, but I usually clean it every spring (the car only has a total of 106,000 total.. maybe 20k of that with the K&N in it).
Jeez, I thought it was self cleaning! (j/k) I haven't touched mine since I put it in 45k miles ago. I know, I know! Just another sign of my state of mental overload.
Guess I need to put it on my To-Do list.
Actually, I think that someone said that, if you do the airbox mod & the K&N filter, it really does the same thing as the FIPK. I can't remember who it was but I was sure they said to save your money if looking to buy the whole kit. I have just the air box mod & filter & I can't imagine that it would be any improvement buying the whole thing. Just my two cents anyway.kf6kmx wrote:...I'm thinking about going the full cold-air-intake kit on the S10..

What I REALLY want but they dont make, is the Snorkel!Pauleo wrote:Actually, I think that someone said that, if you do the airbox mod & the K&N filter, it really does the same thing as the FIPK. I'm thinking about writing to the compnay is Australia that makes it, and see if I give them the dimentions and angle of the window pillar, is they can match up a snorkel and extarnal parts to a kit they do make, and I'll worry about the internal parts/etc.

I did the drop in k&n filter and the air box mod. I noticed a big difference. You can really hear the air flowing through when you mash the pedal. But I did my air box mod a little different. I drilled a ton of holes in the front of the air box that faces the grill and headlight and the side of the air box that is opposite of the engine. I just drilled a bunch of holes but yet it kept the integrity and strength of the air box. The air box is really easy to pop out, it just takes a couple minutes. I believe it was HJ that had done the air box mod and then went to the FIPK I believe he said he didn't notice any difference so basically your paying $50-60 for the k&n filter and then drilling the holes instead of paying the $200-300 for the FIPK. Try it if you don't like it I believe Borderman has an extra air box or you can pick one up at a junk yard that you can experiment on. Mine works fine and I like it.kf6kmx wrote:I'm thinking about going the full cold-air-intake kit on the S10..

It was HJ that said the air box mod was as effective as the K&N FIPK so save your money. I did the AIRAID routine but know you will have the same thing with the $30 ebay mod and making your own heatshield.
There was a difference in performance, major music to your ears and a slight improvement in mpg for me.
On the subject of mpg, I have gone from 12 mpg to 20 mpg, in the same week, by doning a blue wig and driving the speed limit

I'd rather take a beating but, it just works and I have no idea why I did it and my wife thought I lost my mind

I'm right there with you!kf6kmx wrote:...What I REALLY want but they dont make, is the Snorkel!
I have even thought about forming my own , or adapting one for another vehicle, but the fender access is not good. There is just no good place to exit
I am seriously considering a Z24 aircleaner and sealed to the cowl for induction, or just ducting it to the wiper cowl.
