ZR5 Appearance package -> Bed Cap

Post by j0ker v1.25 »

As I'm sure most of you know, the ZR5 package comes with bed rails. I'd like to remove these so I can put a cap on the bed of my truck. I'm not sure how a cap mounts, so I'm wondering if I can use the holes from the bed rails to install the cap. Any additional information would be appreciated.

You could probably set the cap on the truck and mark where the holes in the bed rails are on the cap and drill & bolt the cap on with some fender washers.

BUT...

most every cap, hard or soft cover etc I've ever seen comes with a set of C-clamps that hold the cap on snugly and are fall less labor intensive to install.

Oh, so that's how they mount? If that's all it is, then the cap will just cover up the existing holes, right? At least that way, I can keep the rails for future reference.

Yeah, I suspect that your cap will just clamp down on top of the bed.

Of course I don't know which cap you've got or any of the specifics but I'm sure if you were to give the manufacturer or retailer a call, they'd be able to verify.

I think he just wants the rail cap like these

RAIL CAPS

I would say these install with double sided tape or a few small screws on the inside of the rail

oh? yeah, if that's what you're talking about, it's just double sided tape. Will install right over the holes.

AND...

if that's the case, what did you get? I've been wanting to get similar caps for a while now but can't find enough information on any to know which ones I want to buy.

Hmm, maybe I used the wrong terminology? I'm talking about what's also been referred to as a "shell". You know, like from Leer, or Century. Or like the one SoCalDave had for sale (camper shell I think he called it.)

Sorry for the confusion, but these are what I mean.

They match my paint already, and I'm thinking those are really low prices, so I may just buy both.

You could use the holes from the rails but, most shells just clamp on and will cover and seal the holes left over from removing the rails. :D

Is the tonneau cover specifically for the ZR5 package or will it fit the non ZR5s that don't have bed rails?

I believe the cover is totally independent of the bedrails. it's only ZR5 specific because it's got "ZR5" embedded into the tonneau.

Are you interested in selling it and if so, what would you ask for it?
