For $9 worth of self adhesive black vinyl I may give it a try.

You might be right about it looking strange in person. That is why I thought I'd use the vinyl. If I don't like it I'll just peel it off and wipe off the adhesive.

You're right, I like to use a diluted windshield washer fluid mix.
