Gears

Post by OffroadinZR5 »

I was thinking of getting new gears, either 4.10s or 3.73s, I heard somewhere that ill need a thicker axle to change to anything bigger than 3.73's. Is someone just feeding me some BS, or do the gears just go in no problem to the factory axles. I currently have 3.42's. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks alot guys.

The axles will be fine and I am not aware of any "thicker" ones being available.
All you need to change is the ring and pinion gears.

if you have 32's or more, go with 4.10's

30 or under go with 3.73.

31 is a toss up. either one will be fine, depends on your preference for acceleration

I thought the ZR2 axels were larger since they use the 8.5" 10 bolt? Aren't they like 30 spline vs. 28 spline? :? Maybe this is where the confusion came from? Anyway, for our application the info you got was BS. Like HenryJ said, just ring & pinion, unless you have high mileage then you would also want a complete install kit with new pinion and carrier bearings. :)
