The SAS is done!!!!!

Post by coffeedrnkr »

I just finished my SAS and pulled the crazyblaze out of the garage today, exactly one month since I recieved the first part. That was my goal from the beginning. :D

I still have a lot of stuff to do but it runs and I have driven it to the store and back, and around the block and it seems to be doing fine. Already it drives better and more predictable than when I had my ifs maxed out.

I am ready to go wheelin!!!! but I need shocks, extended brake lines, and a new front driveshaft.

I have a bunch of pics up on my cardomain here:
http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/515961

Enjoy,

Paul

Looks good! It looks from the pics like you have the shackles on the front like most Jeeps. Most of the S-10 SFA swaps I've seen have them on the back of the front springs. Not sure it makes any difference. Just curious why. Do you have any close-up pics of the spring mounts?

If I ever do mine, I'll probably do the Ford style radius arm setup since that's what the axles I have are setup for. Only thing is I hear it's a lot harder to setup than leaf springs. Seems easier when I think about it but I guess maybe I'll find out.

No, I would be glad to share ANY info at all you guys would like to know.

The only way I was able to do this was through other people's help on the forums so I plan to return more than I learned.

The whole swap came out to about 1300, after you add in everything including shocks and brake lines and stuff.

Probably more after you add in tools and drill bits and stuff that I had to buy but I am not including those, but they probably came out to about 150 bux b/c my grinder crapped out on me and i bought a new drill.

I got some new flex pics, I'll post them up here in a sec

We were about 8" from topping out the hi lift but my brake lines were starting to get stretched, so I figure I can top out the hi lift when I get my new brake lines

Nope, no bigger tires at least for now b/c I am out of money.

I barely have enough money for shocks and maybe a driveshaft but I might have to save for that one a little while.

I think they just look small in those pics b/c in every one I was flexed out. they dont look that small when it is just sitting there.

I got my new brake lines and carrier today so I can finally install the gears and shafts then the brakes and be done with it (maybe we can top out the hi-lift too!)

Next I just gotta count my pennies and go beg on the steet then I have to go get a driveshaft made, but I have to modify my exhaust.....again and modify my transmission crossmember.

thats a nice job on your truck! looks good. if you could post some of the technical aspects of your axle swap, namely measurements for the crossmember it would be much appreciated. i would like to do this to my blazer but i would like to be able to do some mockup before i start ripping things apart (its currently my daily driver). thanks and nice job on the swap.

Ya, I can get you some pictures and measurements, though I did mine differently than everybody else and put the shackles in the front which some people discourage but we'll see about that. I got advice from the guy that owns jb4x4.com and he said he has had both shackle on the front and on the rear and that if he were to do it again he would have gone with shackle front so I am taking his advice. He also made me my crossover steering bracket which is a beautiful peice and if you guys do spring over axle with a d30 you should really look into it at www.jb4x4.com

I got adapters off ebay that the guy custom makes for 70 dollars that goes from the jeep bolt pattern to the chevy bolt pattern.

Well, I got the gears and shafts all in and the brake lines are on but since the auto parts store didnt get my wheel bearings in I cant finish it tonight but it will be out of the garage tomorrow and I am gon to go test it.....a lot.

for those of you that were wondering, I did already had it done but I did not have the correct carrier and the wheel bearings were bad so I took it off to install the gears and am now replacing the bearings.

Well, I have a front driveshaft and 4wd now

I also have shocks mounted and a steering stabilizer so it is totally streetworthy now.

My front tire was 35" off the ground before I lifted the rear tire.

I "could" put it back on but it would require trimming it and I am lazy.

I am trying to get my friend that did my welding for me to build me a tube bumper, I dont really want to put the stock one back on :D .
