Where online to get a hitch

Post by coreylubahn »

Guys,

I need to get a hitch ordered for my soon to be bodylifted truck. Everyone has recommended the 3 piece factory GM hitch (part#12496770) or basically the same hitch made by Valley (part#81610). Where online can you buy these animals? I tried Summit and got nothing...did a google search and didn't find much either. Any help will not go appreciated...thanks in advance.

The problem with Reese and Draw-Tite hitches are that they are all once piece designs from what I can see. If I am to "modify" the hitch to raise it 2" after the BL then I need a three piece unit where the middle section bolts to the outside pieces which in turn mount to the frame. This way I can drill holes 2" (or so) higher on the outside mounts and therefore move the middle section up that much to better match the 2" BL. From what I have seen the only ones that are 3-piece designs are the Valley and factory GM unit...but am I wrong...does anyone know any different?

You can buy Valley hitches through NAPA stores.

Or go to one of the online GM dealer parts outlets , GMpartsdirect.com , GMpart.com , P&G Chevy , GMgoodwrench.com , etc.

HJ,

I believe that you had the factory hitch (part#12496770) and modified it to work with the BL, correct? Just wanted to double check before I order it. Found a price of $115.92 for it on one of the webpages. It is able to modified right? Thanks.

Unless you have to have it now or money is no object, keep checking Ebay for that hitch. I got mine for $60.00 and the 3 piece GM hitch can only go up 1.5" due to leaving room for box ends or sockets to fit. :D

So which hitch did you end with then? And was it adjustable after the BL, and if so how did you do it? Thanks for the advice.

No BL yet, I just listened to HJ and went ahead and drilled the holes for the main cross piece to connect to the 2 side brackets in anticipation of my up coming lift. :D

Yes and Reed is right it will raise 1.5"-

That is the part number for the hitch package , so you will get the plug-n-play wiring too.

HenryJ, In your hitch picture, is that the 31" (metric) spare you mentioned before? I am also about to order the hitch, and would like for my spare to be the same as my tires, 30.2". I remember you saying that it fits tight, so I should probably stay with an 31" AT or street tire since the MT's might have too much extra meat on the sides and maybe a clearance problem. What do you think? :?

Yes, It is an older Uniroyal , I thought it was metric, but I just went out and checked it is a 10R15 Laredo. It is a little narrower, but pretty close to the same diameter as my Geolandars.

The MT might fit alright, but just pick up a cheap AT. Spares are not needed all that often now that the tire technology has improved.
You should have plenty of room. The GM/Valley hitch is "bowed" to the back allowing for more room.
The only place that mine is very tight is where the 3" exhaust exits the stock location. It is not that tight, just doesn't have as much room as it did stock.

A 31" tire will fit OK. I'm not sure if you could squeeze a 32" tire in there , but it may be possible.

When I had my dakota CC, it had a 3" BL on it so I didn't want a factory fitting hitch that stuck out 3"s below the bumper. Summit has some hitches that are designed for the low riders so that the hitch comes out behind the license plate. With a 3" lift this put the reciever directly below my bumper and it looked great! I would assume the same for the s-10's, but I don't know if it will work with only a 2" BL

I've bought a few from www.hitch-web.com and have been happy with them.

I was @ Summit one day in Reno and thought about doing the same thing with one of their roll pan hitches. I took one out to the parking lot and put it under the Crew, and can tell you that it will work, but you would need to fabricate some spacers about 1" to 1-1/2" high. I almost bought one, but the welds were very crappy, :? and when I laid the hitch on their counter Me and my girlfriend both noticed that the hitch was crooked! If you wanted to try this style of hitch, I would recommend not getting the Summit brand hitch.
