inexpensive roof rack

Post by mjmcdowell »

I have been looking around for a roof rack for my 2002 CC for quite some time, seen all the regulars, the super heavyduty, the T's and the Y's and some in between, all good, all expensive not ready to go that way or have a dealer mount a factory one for me yet. Anyway was in my local Advance Auto Parts store recently and saw a roof rack made by "Bell" mfg. (the same co. that makes bike acessories) so I checked it out, attaches w/straps that pass thu rear door seams (not that bad you still have head room) and they rest on the roof w/4, 4" suction cup feet, side rails are brushed aluminum, round tubing as are the 4 cross slats that are eliptical . It has 4 tie down points per side, black nylon end caps on all and one set of feet/suction cups are adj. so as to accomidate sloped roof lines if needed ( which we don't ) Slats are held in place w/ detent pins which make the whole rack easy to break down if need be (comes in a nice heavy nylon carry bag) measures 36' " X 36", seems to be very well made is rated for up to 100 lbs. is very high on the "cool " scale, ( it matches the bed extender) and best of all it only cost me $65 and change, inc. tax! couldn't resist I now have one mounted on my truck. I have driven up to 85 mph w/it mounted and found that it also does not "whistle" which is good, only thing that might be of a concern is that alot of weight on it might cause the front two feet to "oil can" the truck top slightly although I don't think permently, I pushed down pretty hard albet carefully and no damage was done. I dont know how often I will use it (It dismounts very quickly anyway) probably only to carry the tent and sleeping bags, mabey a clothes duffle when I take my son camping, I think it will work out well for this application freeing up my bed for other supplies, I have a tool bok mounted with recovery stuff, etc. in it and this make an allready small bed smaller. check it out mabey It can work for you if you need a rack but don't want the high price, as I said I think it rates very high on the "cool" scale, wish I could post a photo but I have reached that stage of computer literacy just yet. long post, hope some can use the info, stay safe mjmcdowell
