HPP3

Post by Walt »

Hey folks, I just scored a HPP3 off Ebay for $175 for a 2001 S-10 4.3. Does anyone know if I will notice a big improvement in performance and/or gas mileage with regular gas? And what about premium?

Thanks1

you will notice the shifting. I have mine set for 93 octane but, run 89 with no knocking. maybe a mile or 2 gain in mileage

Shift firmness and the option to adjust for different tire sizes are the features that make it worthwhile IMO.

I didn't notice any mileage improvements, and run the 87 octane power tuning with 89 octane fuel, for little to no real gains in performance.

Is the programmer used or brand new? You can't tell by looking at it. If it has been used and the previous owner did not return to factory programming then you won't be able to use it until you send it back to Hypertech to have it cleared. This is an e-bay scam that I've seen before. Some people will buy the programmer, use it, then resell it for some money and still have the upgraded tuning installed for their vehicle. Performance and gas mileage only improved slightly for me. I'm using the 93 octane tuning, but I usually only fill up with 91 octane. It will run fine on 91, but I definitely like getting 1/2-2/3 tank of 96 octane at Infineon Raceway ( Sears Point ) and 1/3-1/2 tank of 91 octane. There is a definite power increase with this mixture. 8)

I paid $260 for mine through a GP, so you got a good buy.

It really doesn't seem like a huge difference at first. The shift is noticeably better though.

If you want the full effect, drive it for a month or so with the programming, then take it out for a few days :yikes: You will NEVER want to stay stock!

I loaned mine to a friend to try on his Highrider for a week. That was a looong week. I started to worry if he would give it back, and he did say that he hated to come back and remove the programming ;)

You will enjoy it :D

I did verify that the previous vehicle was set back to stock. So I'm ok there. I think I'm mostly looking forward to setting shift points. I think my truck should shift about 500 RPMs sooner at full throttle--About 4500 instead of 5000.
