Auto fade/dim dome lights: HOW TO ADD
ever notice how all the newer gm vehicles have the dome light slowly fade out to off when you close the door? Anybody every want to add this to there S10? Anybody know how?
I found a website that sells a add on for all cars, any thoughts thoughts how to made the dome lights fade out rather than just go off?
What is behind that little black cover?

My dad's new ram does that.
I never use mine, I have the dome light turned off from the dashboard.
Sounds like too much work for a worthless moment of dimmage I have stuff to fix before I start on stuff like that (ya I usually spend the following week after an offroad trip with nothing but nights of cleaning out mud and fixing what I broke from using the loud pedal too much )

Could be a simple capacitor.. as it discharges, the lights get dimmer and go off (cap = short life battery )twodoorblazer wrote:

Actually looking at the diagram, you could probably get away using a cap and a couple transisters..
use the trans. to sense/switch when the igntn is cycled and then the door closed to put the cap in line and drain out through the dome light.

It does appear to be a capacitor.
I would think that it could be installed inside the upper console easy enough.
I don't fully understand how it works right now. I do think you guys have the idea of how though. When the light comes on it charges the cap, then when you disconnect the light it discharges giving a dimming effect.
I'm sure one of the electronics "gurus" can explain more clearly how it works and where to get the parts for cheap

I found a couple schematics that do what your asking for... The first doesn't look fun at all and is much bigger than the picture you posted:
Automatic Dome Light Dimmer
Also, on the website I found that link on there is a guy who explains why a capacitor will not work: More dimmer info
Then I found another schematic that uses a relay, resistor, and capacitor. I think the relay could be removed and the circuit would still work as intended.
So in my conclusion... there's one site that says a capacitor won't work and another that says it will. I hope this helps some, and good luck!!

Eric, wow, thanks for the extended searching... Those are things I could not find (besides the 12 volt).
Anyway, the site where I got the photo and digram were from
http://www.webelectricproducts.com/
click on dome light dimmer on left hand side and then I think outs since negative switched is the DLD 1 I originally posted.
There also are install instructions for it ton on the main menu, check it out to see if it brings any other ideas.

I would buy the add on that you found in your first post. It seems like the easiest way to get the effect you are looking for. Yes....you could probably build your own homegrown version, but $40 for an off the shelf version is the way to go in my book.
As far as hooking it up, I would bet that someone on here has a wiring diagram for the S-10 laying around somewhere.
