I am "recharging" my K&N drop in filter for the first time. I have a few questions as I have never done this. Is the gauze suppose to turn white after rinsing out the cleaning solution? Mine definitely lightened up to a pink color but did not turn white.
Just to be safe I let the filter dry for a whole day before I oiled it. Which brings me to my next question. I know there is a fine line between over and under oiling. I have also heard that over oiling can cause damage to the MAF sensor and GM will not warranty a MAF if a K&N is present. Is the MAF easily damage from the oil or would it take saturation of the filter to cause damage? How much is to much oil?
The recharge kit I got came with the oil in an aerosol can not the squeeze bottle. I followed the directions and sprayed with single passes from about 3 inches away. After I let the filter sit for 20 minuets as directed so the oil can wick into the filter, I noticed many little oil droplets in the mesh on the side I sprayed which was the dirty side. I blotted this oil up with a cloth and am letting the filter lay sprayed side down for a day before I reinstall. There were no droplets on the other side and I obtained a uniform crimson color to the filter. Did I over oil???
Sorry for being long winded.
Thanks,
Pete

Can I oil it to little? It is not as wet with oil or as dark red as when I bought it. Should I give it a little more oil?
Thanks,
Pete

i usually go around mine (airraid) twice to get a good coating on it but not so much that it starts a bad drippingand usually a few hours drying then inspect to make sure all is covered if not spray the light spots again.

You can oil it too much though
I was being dumb and sprayed too much oil on mine and when I put it back in my car and left it started choking and lagging a little bit. So make sure you don't be like me

GM has a service bulletin out concerning aftermarket oiled airfilters. Apparently it has become a big deal. It's something about the oil getting on the MAF Sensor, or some other part, and ruining it. They say the replacement part is around $600, but I can't remember the specifics.

Thats where my concern came from about over oiling. I was curious just how bad you had to over oil to damage the MAF. I ended up with a little less oil on the filter then when it was new. I think I will be just fine.wamason wrote:GM has a service bulletin out concerning aftermarket oiled airfilters. Apparently it has become a big deal.
