?? Changing drive line fluids??
My truck is about to hit 25k ticks on the clock. I have decided it is time for a little more than the oil, filter and lube services I have been doing at 3000 mile intervals.
I am going to change the fuel filter. This looks like a fun job .
I am also going to change the fluids in the transfer case and both diffs. I had the dealer do the G80 required fluid change at about 4000 miles. I have never done this before, and have a few questions.
1. Is there a torque spec for the bolts on the rear diff cover or can I just tighten normally?
2. How do I get the fluid in the diffs and t-case? It looks as if there is no room to tip a bottle up into the fill holes. I am thinking of using a funnel with some tubing on it and helper to either pour the fluid in the funnel or hold the tube in the fill hole.
3. The t-case takes DEX III, can I use any GL-5 rated 80W90 for the diffs or do I need to use the stuff from the dealer?
I will do a trans fluid purge and filter change in another 5-10k miles.

hmm..... I guess if the GM stuff is not to expensive, I will use it. I do have the G80, but a lot of the guys at zr2.com just use a quality GL5 80W-90.
How many bottles of the 1052271 are required for doing both diffs? I guess I could figure it out for myself, but sometimes I can be a little lazy .

OK Brule, you talked me into it. Your right about some guys at zr2.com having problems with the G80. Mine works as it should and I would like to keep it that way. I will use the GM lube.
I thought the 2.5 bottles as stated in the linked thread was for the rear diff only. If I recall, my owners manual gives the capacity for the rear but not the front. I will have to check that again.

You can use SAE 80-90w for the front.
The rear only needs two quarts , but they only sell the GM "special" lube in 23 oz. bottles , if I recall correctly. That is why you need two and a half bottles. (Yes, it is a rip-off)

I went to my dealer last night to get few bottles of the 1052271 axle lube and he gave me 89021671. When I questioned him on the different part number, he said that the number had been changed. This stuff is labeled as 80W-90 and exceeds GL4 standards. It also says it is compatible with all friction modifiers.
Do I have the correct stuff???

I replaced the fluid in my rear differential with Mobil 1 sythetic fluid. Honestly, the differential works better than it did before! Now I can't wait for winter time around here so I can kick out the rear end in the snow going around corners, instead of just the inside wheel spinning (stupid G80 ).

barch97 are you running the AMSOIL 75w-140 gear oil in your C.C.? If so, was there a particular reason you went with the heavier weight?
