Air Box Mod.

Post by dotmot »

Made the air box mod. last weekend. Put in Green Air filter at the same time. Does make a lot more sound when stepping on the pedal. Doesn't seem to have as much pick up anymore and is knocking.Do I need to get more gas flow and if so how do I achieve this?

Go back and make sure that your IAT sensor, PCV tube is connected and all connections are tight.

The airbox mod should in no way affect the engine so that it would knock, and or cause a loss of acceleration.

Since these mods are before the MAF , any increases in airflow will already be compensated for by the sensor.

Oh, and  welcome

Thanks for the welcome Henry and also the information you supplied me with. I will go and make sure all connections are tight. By the way I have a 2001 Crew which I have added Nerfs , Bed rails , roof rack, window shades and bug shield , looks pretty good.Love the Truck , had a 97 tracker which I bought new and 97,000 miles never had to spend a penny other than tires. Looking forward to doing more Mods in the future , thanks again. :P :P

It is a "stretch" , but if you have the top off the airbox, check the MAF to make sure oil is not on it from an over oiled air cleaner.

Oil deposits on the sensors can cause problems.

It really is unlikely, but worth a look if you are still having problems.

Since you have a 2001, is it time for a good thorough tune-up? Seafoam, cap, rotor, plugs, wires, etc.

The filter is brand new , don't think oil an issue. Truck was bought March2003 only had 16,000 miles on it now only has 38,000 , I don't think it needs tune up.After work today am going to check all of the issues you pointed out. Maybe because of the added deep sound it makes now it maybe my imagination pickup has fallen off? What octane should I be running , I use regular. Thanks Again for the imput. :?

I run the mid-grade. Not so much for the added resistance to detonation, but for the mileage.
I tested the three grades of fuel available here. The best mileage was obtained from running the mid-grade with a gain of 2 mpg.
This is enough to justify the 10 cent increase in price. I am actually saving money by running the mid-grade over regular. The premium fuel did not show a substantial increase.

Don't let mileage be the whole reason for doing a tune-up. Some items deteriorate with time and still require maintence reguardless of mileage.

If you are capable of doing the inspection your self, I would at the very least check things. Ash build-up on the cap is the first thing that comes to mind. I have seen cap and rotors that were severely worn with less mileage.

Everything needs to work together. If you are having an issue with a loss of performance, make sure that everything is in good working order.
