Window treatment ( black the post)

What do you think?

For $9 worth of self adhesive black vinyl I may give it a try.

Here's the before-

I really do not want to paint it, in case I don't like it.

I did this to a 40' AM General coach that I helped build, and I've noticed both Ford and Dodge have done it on some of their models.

I have thought about doing it myself, straight on side view looks good but from angles it looks odd.

Funny you should say that...see what I was doing while you were posting

You might be right about it looking strange in person. That is why I thought I'd use the vinyl. If I don't like it I'll just peel it off and wipe off the adhesive.

ahh.. I think it looks sharper without it. I would have to agree that the pewter/black combo looks killer on our trucks but I wouldn't over-do it with the window pillar and posts. If thats how you like it than give it a shot but i like it better with color up to the roof

The A-post would not be "do-able" with the vinyl since there is no where to tuck the leading edge.

If I was painting it would be possible. Who knows I still might give it a try.

The B-post looks to be pretty simple. Lay a straight edge across the top and bottom to align with the windows seals and window channel. Pull the seals loose. Cover with vinyl (may require heating to form it to the area under the weather strip.) and re attach the weather strip/window channel.

Sounds easy? I'll check it out in a week or two, if I don't get talked out of it before then

It definately looks cool. I may do it in paint as my truck gets older. I also plan to paint mine silver on the lower half & remove the black moldings

after I get enough stone chips.

my nissan sentra had its pillars blacked out from the factory. I though it made it look bigger.. that is till I peeled them off because I cant leave anything alone.. I say about 9 bucks is worth the time to try.

I have a similar plan , though it includes keeping the molding and painting from the bodyline down with black Rhinoliner or similar liner coating.

Update:
I did the drivers side a couple days ago.
Gave it some time for the newness to wear off and the "new-mod-rose-color-glasses" to come off...

My wife likes the blacked posts better, and I do not argue with her on most things (we discuss, or at least... I ...do

)

I can't really say for sure what it does for the look, I'm thinking it simplifies or cleans up the appearance a little.

I did the other side today, although I may have to re-apply the rear doors on both sides since I have a few small bubbles that I am not pleased with.

We will see if I change my mind, but for now I like it.

when I was blackening out my back window with the same vynle you probably used.. the tint guy told me to spray it with soap and water like tint.. then appy it and move as I please.. then squeegee the air bubble out.. I thought this might help..next time

You're right, I like to use a diluted windshield washer fluid mix. It seems to evaporate faster and is enough to break the surface tension for smaller droplets.

Most of the trouble spots were created by trying to stretch along the compound curves. I used a heat gun to help stretch in these areas.

I did rush things a bit and I'm sure that I can do a better job now that I have some practice.

Believe it or not, I have quite a lot of experience setting decals

I maintain a fleet of over 73 vehicles, and each one gets two 10"x12" company identification logos.

I still get a bubble or two sometimes though

Update: Almost all of the tiny bubbles that I had , evaporated

There was however some shrinkage at one corner, a nick from the weatherstrip and one corner that did not adhere properly. It does not look too bad, but I'll probably "re-do" at some point.

It has grown on me and I will probably be painting them down the road.

One thing it does is "darken" the appearance of the rear windows. Kind of an eye trick I guess. Overall I do think it just cleans up the appearance. It is one of those things that you can't quite tell what was done , but just know some thing is different.

I'll be keeping it.

I did the same with a Cressida wagon back in the 80's, but I used paint... Where can I get the vinyl......I like the looks. and the price.

Ordway sign supply is where I bought mine.

I'd check with your local vinyl sign shop first though. You can probably pick up the stuff for less $ and save the shipping charges.

There has been some question as to what I did here.

After pulling loose the upper rear window channel and lower outer wiper/felts. I used a dry erase marker to make a dotted line across the top and bottom lining up where the vinyl would go.I then cut the sheet to the approximate size allowing 1/2' to 3/4" that would extend under the removed weatherstripping and around the door edges in to the jamb. Tha main thing is to have the top and bottom edges right. You can trim the stuff under the weatherstrip, and the portion that wraps into the jamb if needed.

Clean the area thoroughly.

I then misted the area with washer fluid prior to application and used a heat gun to soften the vinyl into the compound curves while applying. A hair dryer could easily be substituted as it really doesn't take much heat to soften the vinyl.

Reinstall the weather stripping and you're done
