I need help with tire size selection..

Post by 2bunik »

Ok I have bought a BL lift for the truck and it came in today. amazingly I have all the parts in the box. The problem is that I dont understand tire sizes. I searched and found SOME information I do understand but I still have alot of questions..
Body lift will go on tomorrow.
I am also going to get spacers on order like next week
I also want a tbar cranck and shackles..
my question is. I have stock ZR5 GMC SONOMA rims. 15's
What I want to know is if I can fit 32's on my stock rims? Also Will they rub? after I do all of the above.
I went to les schwabs and this is what they gave me..

31/1050R-15/6 Wild country TXR TRACTION - $ 116.92
31/1050R-15/6 Wild country XTX all position $113.17
31/1050R-15/6 Open Country $113.00
and
32/1150R-15/6 Wild country TXR TRACTION - $130.32

can I fit the 32's . I dont plan on off roading as much as some of you do. I do plan to go off road somewhat but nothing major, yet. So this will mainly be for all year round driving.. Does anyone here have 32's with stock rims.

Now on one of the searches I did. I found one where CONMAN wrote the below.
CONMAN Here is a pic of my old 89 Trooper Shorty with 32x11.5x15 on 15x7 zero offset rims..
So CONMAN does that mean that I can fit 32 on my stock rims. I am not a tire guy and the les schwabs guy said they wouldnt wear right? Thanx for your guys input.. I tried searching but dont understand ..

32x11.5's will fit on the rim, but the tire guy could be right...they may not wear correctly. If you can visualize how the bead would need to be squeezed narrower than normal to fit on the rim, this would cause the tread to bow outward slightly, which could cause the center of the tire to wear out faster. Whether or not this would actually happen, I don't know...but I can see why they'd say that. Also...32's will probably rub a good bit on the frame at full lock and on the rear of the wheel well when turning and flexing. With only basically 3" of lift, I wouldn't recommend the 32's.

You still might have some issues with the 31's depending on whether they're closer to 31" actual diameter or not. Some 31" tires are smaller actual diameter than others...it depends on the manufacturer. BFG's tend to be a little larger than most 31's...Yokohamas tend to be a little smaller. Also look at the tread...especially the edges. If the tread is fairly flat with square-ish edges, they may rub more (like the BFG AT's). If the tread and the edges are more rounded, you'll get a little extra clearance.

Is that topic still being discussed on that other forum? That was months ago.

10.5 should fit no problems on a 7" rim...that's what is on the ZR2's stock. 12's probably wouldn't be a problem on a 7" rim, but I can kind of see the point of the tire guy. Don't know til you try I guess. :)

We got our shackles from the place linked on the mods page. Not sure if it's still linked or not, but it used to be. They were $55 per pair when i got mine. Hobie might still know the name of the place...they're in LA area.

Hi,
the 11.5 wide tire on the 15x7 was on the trooper when I bought it. I've heard people have issues getting any tire place to mount that combo since it's not recommended. I did not have the truck too long so I'm not sure how the tire wear would have been. I'll ask the person I sold the wheels too as he put them on his amigo and let you know.

As for it fitting. Before I sold the wheels, I was thinking to move the tires on to the stock Crew wheels but it appears I would have rubbing issues on the inside as well as rubbing the fender on the outside even with a bodylift. I'm waiting to see how the Super Lift kit goes and see what they recommended on tire size. I'm thinking they will allow 32s but best fittment might be a 31x11.5 though since our crew rear openings are smaller than regular beds. Plus I bet they will recommend different than stock back spacing.

Good Luck,
Con
