On a somewhat related note, when I changed my stock lugnuts to black, I noticed the lugs were a little rusty and nuts didn't spin off very smoothly. So, I sprayed each lug with WD40 before I put the new nut on. Of course this resulted in a tremendous amount of over-spray WD40 on my then pretty dull and begining to rust chrome center caps.
WOW! what a difference WD40 made. Cleaned most of the minor surface rust off just wiping with a rag. Also it appears to have created a sort of protective barrier on the chrome finish and they have not gotten nearly as rusty and dull as they did the first month or so (now about 6 months later).
I'm sure someone is going to tell me how terribly awful it is to use WD40 on chrome but, you'll not convince me.
