And I thought gas was gas

Post by pukas84 »

Got my truck back and turned out my rough idle was a slight misfiire. Here is what they wrote up for my truck:
20105 HO2 sensor bank 1 sensor 2 causing rich exhaust and fouled all spark plugs-HO2 sensor data was @ 0 milllivolts at idle & all spark plugs were fouled w/ black soot, didn't set any codes. Replaced HO2 sensor bank 1 sensor 2-monitor HO2 sensor data-tested normal 150-220 millivolts at idle-replaced all spark plugs. Found fuel pressure regulator causing excessive fuel pressure leak down-fuel pressure drops 10 psi w/in 1 minute-removed intake plenum-fuel leaked from regulator-replaced fuel pressure regulator. Distributor cap won't stay secure-dist base was cracked-replaced dist. Coolant temp sensor was cracked but no code-connector not secure-replaced coolant temp sensor-checked coolant temp sensor data-ok. Engine still ran rough at idle-performed bulletin 00-06-04-003b-injector clean procedure. Engine still runs rough-shows current misfire data on all cyls at idle-goes up 2-8 counts then clears. Called technical support-was advised to check fuel quality-fuel-fuel in vehicle is contaminated and weak. Advise replace fuel and filter.

Sorry didn't want to leave anything out. I fill my gas at Costco and can't believe their gas quality is bad. Oh well, will try fill up at Shell (per technician) and see what happens. If not back to the dealer. Anybody had this problem due to poor fuel? Any recommendations, fuel additive, higher octane, etc.? Thanks for your help, love this place!!![/code]

Exactly!!! Figured try filling up at a different station and bring my truck back to the dealer. Don't want them to tell me my gas is still contaminated. Maybe put in a bottle of octane booster befor i take it back.

My Trooper was having troubles starting. I took it to the dealer and they said I might have got bad gas cause the fuel filter was very milky. They did an injector cleaning as well(what ever that means). I think they also did an ECM reprogram. I still had issues and they had to replace my fuel pressure regulator as well. The only thing I can think of is that I took a road trip to Ohio so I might have got some bad gas along the way. Trooper is running fine now. Mostly I goto Mobil and Exxon cause I have a Corp. Account there and put in 87octane for both trucks.

Cheers,
Con

Octane booster won't clean the fuel. Bad gas is bad gas. Just run through a tank or two from a different station...that's all you can really do.

I cant say for sure how bad the rough idle was or is, but I can tell you that all of my S-10's that I have ever owned and worked on with the V6 have always had a bid of a rough idle. I tried for a while to fix it, but nothing ever worked. As far as the bad gas thing, the mechanic could be right. He works on a lot more cars than you, so maybe the shop is noticing a trend, I know that we do. The cracked coolant temp sensor is nothing new, when GM learns to make good parts... WATCH OUT they will rule the maket, but until then... As far as the cracked distrubitor crack? What in the hell could of caused that by bad gas. Gas doesnt even come near that distrubitor unless you poured it on there, even then I dont think it would crack, maybe start on fire and melt, but not crack. To me it sounds like the mechanic was having a slow week and trying to find work. I dont care what any other mechanic says, we do find work for ourselves when we are slow. Our paycheck depends on it.
make up for your lack of speed with an over the top stereo. This way your still cool.

More than likely someone did not clean the locktite off when they reinstalled the cap.

Well took the truck back and they replaced the computer again, but still idle roungh. Took it back again, found 2 injectors bad, changed it but idle same. Service manager questioned my airaid cold air intake. Said to contact Airaid and ask them if the intake would affect anything like catalytic converter or computer, etc. But I am sure it doesn't. Also if I would need a new computer chip for the increased air. I think they are running out of options on how to fix my rough idle. Truck still under warranty, going to ask them if I can trade my truck in and get a good deal on a new crew cab or even a canyon.

You might check to see if your MAF sensor is dirty. Sometimes excessive aftermarket filter oil can dirty the sensors amking the engine run bad. You can clean it with a Q-tip and rubbing alcohol...but be careful not to break the tiny sensor wires as a new MAF is super expensive!

Finally my truck is back to normal. Dealer replaced the crankshaft position sensor and idle is back to normal. :P
