UNH Receives Electric Powered Vehicle
You may notice the electric powered Chevy S10 pickup travelling around campus. The UNH Energy Office received this vehicle via the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services as part of a settlement agreement between US EPA and General Motors regarding excess vehicle emissions. The truck is one of a fleet of 13 State vehicles received to demonstrate the capabilities of Alternative Fuel Vehicles in reducing automotive emissions and promoting energy efficiency/independence. The UNH Energy Office has use of the vehicle for six years. Any faculty interested in having students study vehicle performance data are encouraged to contact the Energy Office.
Here are some basics on the vehicle:
VEHICLE: Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck with advanced Nickel Metal Hydride batteries.
EMISSIONS: Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) certified (including heater emissions). Lifecycle emissions (including electric power plant) per 100,000 miles
estimated at 75 pounds versus 3,008 pounds for comparable gasoline powered vehicle (total pounds of hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and NOX).
ENERGY EFFICIENCY: electric vehicles charged via fossil fuel generating plants have efficiencies of 20 to 25 %. Gasoline vehicles have energy efficiencies of 9 to 14 %. Electric vehicles are almost twice as efficient as gasoline vehicles. And, depending on the generating plant fuel, electric vehicles are less dependent on foreign oil.
ENERGY COST COMPARISON: a full charge uses approximately $2.50 of UNH electricity ($0.10/kWh) or about 4 cents per mile versus 8 cents per mile for gasoline (assuming 15 mi/gal and $1.20/gal cost).
RANGE: 60 - 70 miles average on full charge, depending on outdoor temperature and driving conditions.
BATTERY LIFE: 6+ years
TOP SPEED: 75 mph
HEAT: Diesel fired hot water heater core when outdoor temperature below 40 degrees. Electrically powered heat pump when outdoor temperature above 40.
CHARGER: Delco Electronics MAGNE CHARGE 6.6 kW Hughes inductive type.
