Hello To All

I'm new here, but I have had the crew cab since July 2002. I bought it new and it looks like Jim's, minus the nice leather seats. I've read some of the posts and all of you seem very cool and helpful. I even learned that I'm not the only one with a couple of minor problems, like the wacky gas gauge, thanks for the info. I have been searching for sometime, for someone that makes sub boxes that go behind the seat, and I noticed there are some members that have inquired about it also. Today, I found a company in Florida that makes a dual 8" enclosure just for 01-03 S-10 and Sonoma Crew Cabs, no mods needed. You can see and purchase it at their website; www.soundoffaudio.com They also sell it on eBay, but their shipping rate there was $14 more for me at a flat rate of $25. I am on the east coast, so those further west may pay closer to the eBay flat rate anyhow. The box is $89, and I think my JL 8w1-4's should fit in it just fine. http://www.soundoffaudio.com/item.cfm/id/2137 ...this is a direct link to it, I hope it works.

a2b, I'm sorry to see you have sold yours, and I hope the buyer has as much fun with it as you did. My adventures haven't been nearly as exciting as yours, but I do plan to keep mine for a long time.

Edited the title to make it easier to search for the box info.-HJ

Thanx Hobie

Not afraid, just cautious. Central Virginia is the location, and a crew cab gathering would be awsome. Summers are best, kids are out of school. Speaking of kids, I have 3 boys ages 24 and twin 10 year olds. They keep me and the crew cab rocking and rolling. I lost my spouse to cancer 2 years ago, so being mom and dad is double duty.

I sure do like my truck, and I'm glad I didn't get the Dakota I was looking at first. Chevy's incentives got my bucks, and I got the crew cab for $2000 less than the Dakota, and $4800 less than sticker. I really wanted silver, but there were none to be found at the time. My first love of the non-sexual type, was a 1974 blue GTO, 350 4bbl, 4-speed. I sold it in 1985 in mint condition, and I still miss it. Pontiac started a new GTO series recently, but it seems too un-american for me. Chevy has my heart for now.

Can't remember who it was, but one of the members was looking for Door Entry Protectors/Step Shields for the Crew Cab. They can be found at: ultimatechevy.com for $33.47, set of 4. I've ordered from them a couple of times with no problems. Haven't gotten those YET though.

I may be a newbie here, but I guess you can tell I've been around the block a few times.

Thank you for the welcome. I found this site and soundoffaudio.com because I didn't give up my google searches for the sub box for the crew cabs. I've seen other forums but none seemed as friendly and helpful. I was into the wee hours last night reading the posts and checking out the pictures. Even the boys enjoyed the pics, they commented that they did not know our truck could do those things in the mud and on the big rocks. I told them our truck won't be doing those things, but maybe we will go down to Oregon Inlet in NC this summer, and let the crew cab get its paws in the sand.

My 24 year old son is also named Paul, and he sure would like to get his grubby hands on the crew. I told him sure, when he comes up with $22,000 to buy it! Heck, I only have 5,600 miles on it, so when someone else wants to drive it I say :!: The twins will start driving it in 5 years, and I am already dreading the mere thought of 2 with learners permits.

Welcome and thanks for that sub box info. I might have to sneak in an order for one sometime soon. My little Bazooka tube just wetted my appetite for bass. :)

And don't worry much about getting the crew through some tough stuff. It may look like a 2WD, but with some decent tires and small mods, it will take you a lot of places you never expect to go.

Hello Mark

Thank you for the welcome. Yeah, I've been tolerating stock audio for way too long. Also this week, I ordered an aftermkt head unit and replacement door speakers. I'm not into earth shattering bass, so the dual 8" subs, with new head unit and speakers should satisfy me, ...I hope. The JL subs I have, came from what is called the 8.1 Microsubs. The microsub boxes will not fit behind the seat. They may have if I had removed the plastic panel, but I really did not want to do that. They were made to sound like 10's. They sound close, but a 10" is a 10". One microsub would have fit, firing down, between the console and back seat. Problem here is that the boys sometimes have a friend along that needs that space for his feet! I also have MTX 10's, and considered putting those in the bed with a compression boot between the cab and camper shell. Well, we all already know those beds are sometimes not big enough for all the stuff we haul. So, this is why I've held out for the box that fits behind the seat. Seems my patience is paying off.

Sound Off Audio has already confirmed my order and credit card info. I read somewhere on the site that they make these boxes by the order, so they can't ship them right away. I believe the info said to allow 3-4 days extra for construction. I'll try to keep the forum updated on all phases, all the way through installation. Their info also states that they will cut the speaker hole for the square type sub for an additional fee. They will also match carpet color for another additional fee, standard is gray.

Yeah, I fear destruction on the off-road, I've seen the nightmares that others have endured. I've done some mud, got stuck in the middle of a huge puddle. It took a strong winch and all night with some help from my friends to get me out. We couldn't tell the truck was white that night, and I am sorry no one had a camera at the time. I plan to get more use from the less than desirable stock tires. $$ is hard to come by for a 1 parent family of 3 boys, so my choice to be conservative is not really a choice. Not having truck payments has been fortunate for me though, I thank my deceased spouse and life insurance for that. It really has been nice knowing it is all mine from day 1.

Those compression boots are nice, but can leak over time. I used to have one on my 92 reg cab S-10. Had a pair of 12" Fosgates in the bed with 800W amp. One bad thing about subs in the bed is that you have to fill the bed walls. Since the bed is double wall construction, you get a hideous resonance (at least my 92 did) from the sheet metal vibrating when the bass hits. I had to fill the space in the bed walls with that expanding foam insulation. Did the trick though...no resonance at all after that.

I've still got the subs and amp...I just need somewhere to put them. :)

Mark, maybe we should do a search on google for a weatherproof box for those 12's. The only way I can vision your using them with the crew cab is to put them on the roof!!

4" mounting depth may be tight for the jl 8's. Where are you putting the amps?

I can't use them in the crew anyway...spare tire is in the way. :)

Hi Justin
4" mounting depth for the JL's WILL be tight. I may have to shave 1/8" from inside the back of the box so the magnets won't be hitting it, or figure a way to raise the sub from the front. I haven't figured out where to put the amp yet. It is just a small 200 watt, so maybe on top of the sub box or tool box. If you have any suggestions about this and fitting the sub into the box, I sure would appreciate you sharing the info.

Hello Jay-Bird
Thank you for welcoming me. I'm not a sub specialist, so I'm not sure how well the Sony 8" will bump. Justin may be best one to ask about that. He has the MB Quarts and Kicker, and I do know they are very good. I'm just using the JL's I already had.

Greetings barch97
Thanx for the welcome. I'm so new here that I did not know admins could delete discussions. You have a good point though, the previous discussions didn't help me find what I was looking for. Also, most of the items that were covered in the past posts can't be found now.

Mark
Isn't your spare tire under the truck?

Jay -- when you're ready to add some subs, gimme a shout, we'll plan something out for ya -- I've got plenty of experience with that stuff.

Hey Mark
I missed that picture! I can now see why your spare tire is not under the truck. You are right, no where for 12" subs, I hope they don't dry rot :(

Hi Scott03
I could see that other members had asked about sub boxes, so I was happy to give the info I found, you are welcome. No new developments, yet, and thank you for welcoming me.

Hello Everybody

I received the 8" dual sub box on Friday, 2/20, which was 13 days after ordering it. It fits behind the seat just fine, with no alterations, and the seat back locks into riding position as expected.

The box is very sturdy, 3/4" composite wood, and all seams appear to be sealed. The sub holes are not on one end as pictured at the web site, they are centered nicely. Also, there is no downward point on the bottom of the box as pictured, the bottom is flat. The carpet is glued on nicely, with no wrinkles or humps, and the only visible seam is in the back.

My JL Audio 8w1's fit like the box was made for them. I wired them so that each sub will handle the amp's full mono load power (Bridged Mono Series). Because I have kids, and the JL's were an investment for 8" subs, I am waiting to receive grills from another source before I install, hopefully next weekend. At the same time, I plan to replace the stock receiver and door speakers. The new head unit is a Pioneer DEH-P4600MP, CD/MP3/WMA receiver with CD changer controls. The new door speakers are Pioneer series TS, 3-way speakers. Obviously, I will need plenty of time to install all of these things, so the "when" is pending the weather and what is happening with the kids.

The weather was perfect this past weekend, and the kids cooperated. Everything went well. The new headunit, door speakers, amp, and sub box are all installed. The amp is held in place above the jack box with velcro. All the wiring to the box and amp are hidden nicely under the doorway thresholds, no visible wiring.

The new system sounds better than I expected. High's, mids, and low's are all clearly heard. Those JL's really do vibrate the whole truck. Not earth shattering, but really nice lows. I will no longer raise my window when the vehicle sitting next to me at a traffic light drowns out my tunes, I'll just crank it up

I got my box and a pair of Rockford Fosgate 400W 8" subs today. Install went fairly easily. I haven't had time to mount the amp correctly and dial everything in, but the initial sound seems good. I'm getting some noise in the subs from the engine though. I may need to get a new RCA cable that's shielded a little better to prevent the interference.

Only thing I didn't like was that there was only one speaker wire attachment on the box. I can't wire the subs in series because the impedence wouldn't be correct, so I had to add another speaker wire attachment to the box. Other than that, it's a good item.

Hey Mark

I'm sorry I failed to mention the box only has one terminal. That was probably because the series set-up is fine for my small amp. I really do need for each sub to have the full power of the amp. Please excuse my lack of consideration, it was an oversight

No big deal...it's nothing a sawz-all couldn't fix. :)
