Road and recreation maps

Post by HenryJ »

It doesn't look like I have brought this up here.

I bought a Benchmark Roads and Recreation Atlas for Oregon quite some time ago. It is one of the best maps that I have seen. Nice shaded color topographic rendering, all the tiny trails that I frequent, includes longitude / latitudes and matches the GPS topo software on the Magellan SporTrac Pro very well. The oregon maps include boundaries for BLM , Forest service and private lands. That makes it nice for Geocaching in unknown territory.

I have tried many maps, and these are the handiest , best detailed maps that I have come across.
In the beginning there were only a few states covered , Oregon was one of the three. Now there are more available! California and Idaho are the two that I just bought.

Check them out- Benchmark maps

They fit nicely in the back of the front seats for easy access. I'll probably get the rest of them as my journeys expand. They are all states that I want to see.

I found my first one at Wally world, the last two I bought from Amazon.com .

HJ,

Do you have the Delorme's Topo USA and if you do, what do you think of it?

Their state map SETS are excellent as well.

No, I use Streets USA for navigation, and move to the SporTrak for the rough stuff. I do have Mapsend Topo on both.

The paper maps are not replaceable , IMO. It is much easier to get the "big picture" on paper, and I never rely completely on electronics :D

Looks like another good resource. I ordered the Back Country Adventures: Utah

Save your money on this one.
The maps lack detail. It is good for some waypoints. Lots of specific long/lat for setting up a trip. That is nice. I would not call it a "valuable" reference tool.
Some of the reading is interesting. The History of different places. Towns long gone and their significance. People who made history. All the outlaws and where they roamed is fun. It might be interesting if you run into questions or want to know more about something. I will probably use some of it, but i do not see it as a must have.

I really was disappointed in the maps. Better detail would have brought it up in my rating.

Thanks for the update! I have still not had much time to evaluate the DeLorme Earthmate PN-20 but, first impressions are good. We'll get into the data sharing as soon as I can. I have that dreaded devld32.exe playing havoc on my desktop. I am having a lot of downtime due to it.

Hey Reed is it devld32.exe or devldr.exe that's causing you problems? I don't see any issures with the first but the 2nd is a creative labs sound card program that is know to cause problems.
