Driving the CC at high speeds

Post by Walt »

Howdy everybody!

Driving to work this morning (about 30 minutes ago), I reached a flat stretch of road that is normally crowded with cars. Today there was no one in sight. So I got the urge to test the CC's limits. I haven't done that with the HPP3 installed. I got to 95, and it took FOREVER to get to 100.... Even with the AC off....

Anyone else loose power at that speed? I've only had it that fast once or twice before, but I'm just wondering..

Thanks,

Is that like some cars that have a spoiler that pops up over a certain speed?

I've pegged my Jimmy on 100 a few times and kept going.

With my 02 S-10 (reg cab, ZQ8, 4.3 5-spd) I could hit 100 with ease and still keep pulling. One time I'm guessing I got close to 120 because I let off and coasted for awhile before the speedo came off the peg at 100. After that, 90 seemed pretty slow.

Eventually wind resistance will overpower the engine. About 90 is the highest I've had mine...but we don't have many deserted roads around here. Not ones flat enough to feel safe doing 100 on anyway.

I had my Z28 up to about 135 once out in AZ. It got pretty "floaty" at that speed. 8) Driving to Vegas in it I used to set the cruise on 100 on a straight stretch between Kingman and the Hoover Dam.

I was racing some guy in a Jeep Liberty once. I won the acceleration part of the battle and also the "my speed limiter is set slightly higher than your's" category. I could hear him start to hit either his rev limiter or speed limiter at about 90 at which point he dropped back but I kept pulling until mine quit at around 95.

I figure my speed limiter kicks in about 95mph but it's pretty much out of steam by then anyhow. I have the limit set at 128 now (just for grins) with the HPPIII but I doubt I could get past 100.

I think if I had 10 or 15 miles I could get it to 110

My Sonoma X-Cab with a 4.3 and 3.73's could easily get to 97 where it cut off...

I'm curious which gears run past 100 the best. My Jimmy has 3.42s which suck for towing but when you get above 80 the truck seems to run best.

I bet the 3.73s make the 4.3 rap out sooner. My 02 had the factory 3.08 plus the 5-speed so at 100 it wasn't even sweating yet.

For that matter, if you have a big enough cliff....
(I always figured that would be the ONLY way to get my VW Bus to go over 70)

 Does It Help At All If You Hit The "4 HI" Button At 95 MPH??

Well, that would explain a few things! I'll bet it would be quieter too! And to think, I had it in 4lo!

What's that 2hi do by the way?

When I buy a new vehicle the first thing I do is take it out on the interstate and crank it all the way up. 8) Anytime I'm driving on the interstate I'm usually running at least 80 or real close :D

Not to throw water on a discussion that has been fun so far but for those of us that like try for that magic 100mph figure, better check your tires. Some all terrain tires are NOT speed rated at all and it wouldn't be fun to have one (or more) fly apart at 90mph. I may be wrong and maybe things have changed over the years but I remember not too long ago that none of the available off road tires had a speed rating above about 75 or so. Not sure of the exact number.

Coming home from TN last month, I hit the speed governor at 98mph at least 10 times. I was messing around with a 2 door Cavalier and I had him beat on the freeway up until my limiter kicked in b/c he then passed. Its only around 2800 - 3000 rpm when it hits, so I'm guessing our trucks have the ability to make it to at least 115 if programed, taking into account the wind resistance and all other things that affect it. I have no problem making it to 98 mph... doesn't seem that sluggish. My truck will hit 72mph at the top of 2nd gear and there's still two more gears to go :)

I'd be the one to find out how fast my truck would go if I had the HPP3 8)

Maybe I'll have to look into getting one of those.

Ok, made some progress! :D

I went to Vicksburg, MS yesterday, and there's a really steep, long hill on HWY 61 north or V'Burg.

I hooked up my ScanGuage to the OBD2 port, to measure my speed over 100 MPH. My speedometer was at 93 MPH when I started my descent. This hill is almost 4 miles long. The scanguage showed 122 MPH about 3/4's down the hill. That's as fast as I could get it. I wasn't able to get an RPM reading (My scanguage was velcro'ed to my steering column.

I was surprised to say the least. If only I could get enough power to hit 122 MPH on a flat stretch of road in less than 10 miles
