old crew (snorkel)

Post by Maximous »

howdy, is there any of you internet Guru's out there that can find a site dedicated to the 96-up crew from the southern regions of the world, they usally have some pretty nice stock accessories, i really want a snorkel for my truck, if not one made in foriegn countries for the foriegn S-10, can anybody figure out what other model truck kinda matches up to the angle of our windshield, this would be a glorious find, the heavens would open up and sing your name, ok maybe not, but i would be really happy, i just want this thing to look pretty cool, im not worried about exact fit, i just do not want to run PVC pipe up the side of my truck :? thats a little, how do you say, not cool, yeah for my 79 bronco, who cares, but not for my 04 CC, by the way, not that i like fords all to much but dang those old broncos are kinda tuff, mine came with the smokers option (ash tray, cig lighter) as did most trucks and cars of that time, but mine also came with the dippers/chewers option, thats where there are holes in the floor and you just spit right thru  oh well, any help on the old crews or match-up snorkel will be much exalted

I think you may be after a product called "Safari Snorkel":
Safari Snorkel manufactures air intake snorkels for numerous four-wheel-drive vehicle applications. Each snorkel is designed for its specific vehicle. The rugged snorkel is made from premium-quality polyethylene, is UV-stable, and will last for years. The high-flow air ducting and body ensure a fresh air supply to the engine. There's a noticeable difference in engine performance when the engine is sucking in clean, fresh air. When using the factory intake, hot engine-compartment air certainly takes its toll on the way your engine performs.

Havent found anyone else yet.. I wish there was an ARB dealer that had each type in stock.. I'd be willing to make my own kit, as long as the outside snorkel would work on the truck, I'd take care of the internals...
One of theose has got to be the right rake for the windshield..

I hate to answer just for the sake of doing so.

I think it would be a really "uphill" battle to add a snorkel on these S-10's Take a look inside that engine compartment. Where are you going to exit through the fender?

Left fender has fuse box, ABS system, Vacuum reservoir. Right fender has PCM, air conditioning, coolant reservoir.

Nothing is impossible, but you would definitely get into some major changes just to access the interior.

Next you need another air box. The stocker tapers at the back, so attaching a hose there would be very difficult. There is just no simple way to use the stock air box. All the good places to attach ducting are on the front. So another airbox design is in order.
An air box off of a late nineties Ford would be nice since you could then use a cone type filter. But here again no where to put it.

I think that matching the A-post rake is the least of your problems here.

I will tell you how it can be done.

Remove the HVAC, sheet metal the opening on the firewall with a 6" hole toward the upper most portion of the firewall.

Reverse the TB turtle so the intake and MAF point to the passenger side. Attach 6" flex tube using a 3.5" x 6" Fernco. Remove the passenger seat and mount a late eighties International Transtar aircleaner in it's place. You will need to bore a 2" hole in the floor boards for the drain valve. Be sure to carefully seal around it. It will point out, so opening the passenger door would allow for easy access to the filter for cleaning. Next bore a 6" hole on the roof. Mount a hood scoop over it. I would suggest the snorkel type scoops so that less water gets in to the system. Personally I like the Harwood rounded pro-stock style scoop. They make a small one that could be cut down. Secure another piece of the flex tubing from the aircleaner to the roof.

I'm not sure where on the roof would be the optimum placement. That might require some testing prior to installation.

There may be many other ways of doing this, and I'd love to have one for the dusty desert conditions that my truck endures. I really don't think that it will be a priority at this point though ;)

Its not as hard as all that really.. You should see the plumbing we have on a '90 Pro Street Mustang here that has a ProCharger on the drivers side, air/air intercooler under the nose, and TB inlet on the passenger side..

You could actually (at least on the '03 I have) modify the front of the existing airbox to take a hose (where the inlet tube is now), duct that into the front of the fender, down the fender and out to the snorkel.. I dont think you'd have to take the fender off even, just take out the inner fender to get in to run the ductwork.. We have the filter on the '90 tucked in up there even.. I'll have to take an engine picture of the car and upload it.. For the ducting we used a combination of hose that came with the blower, and large Dayco fuel neck hose (the stuff between the fille rcap and the tank.. its reinforced and it holding 15+psi boost, so it would definetly hold up to natual aspirated snorkel use..
If you wanted to do real water crossing (as opposed to the elevated intake for dust resons that I'm after) you could use a marine sealer to seal the airbox shuft between filter changes... throw a K&N in and youd only have to open the box on rare occasions..

I like messing around with mods and technical changes.. the truck, car, software, etc.. fastest way to get me looking at ways of doing something is to say "that cant work"...
