The exhaust question again?
Finally got my replacement bed painted and installed on my truck, when I took the old one off I noticed my muffler after 250k has finally seen better days. With the truck running you can hear it leaking and see it dripping moisture during idle. I would like to just purchase a whole cat-back system and I really dont know much about exhaust. Not looking for anything loud or fancy. Dual outputs or just a single standard output is fine. Question is does anyone make something decent that I can just bolt on? A nice tone when idle or when I get on the gas is fine but I prefer to hear my stereo when cruising down the highway at 70 and not my exhaust.
Whats everyones thoughts/experience on this one? Not in a rush to get it replaced so I have plenty of time to think about it.

Re: The exhaust question again?
I really liked the sound of the Flowmaster Force II kit that I had on my 01 Crew Cab. It is made for an extended cab S10, but with a little tweaking it does fit the CC. The kit has a resonator, 50 series 3 chamber SUV muffler, and a 2-1/2" mandrel bent tailpipe. I believe Gibson, Magnaflow, and a few other companies also make cat back kits for the CC. The biggest problem with the factory exhaust is the large restrictive muffler and the small 2-1/4" tailpipe. You want a system that is 2-1/2" from cat to tailpipe. Mandrel bent pipes flow much better than crush bent pipes, so if you can, try to get a mandrel bent system. Some systems are aluminized steel while others are stainless. If you live where rust is a problem or you only drive short distances every day, a stainless system would last much longer. I recommend listening to a few exhaust clips from various S10's on You Tube to help you decide what sound you like best. I even have a few clips on there of my S10 CC and ZR2 Blazer (same user name). ZR2 USA also has a section with various exhaust clips.

Thanks for the info. I was on Summit racing last night and saw a few systems I liked, one from Magnaflow but they said in the specs that it only fits crew cabs with Z85 suspension? I know the ZR5 had different shocks but is that what they mean?

Z85 is the increased capacity leaf springs. As far as I know all the production crew cabs manufactured since 2001 had the Z85 option. You can check your glove box codes just to be sure.
ZR5 is an appearance package and did not include any suspension parts or shocks.

My fathers muffler fell off his 99 xtreme, I took it to the muffler shop here in town and had a straight pipe installed. Decent around town and quiet at speeds as all the sound blows out the back.

Has anyone tried the Aero Turbine muffler? I have seen other trucks with it and the Tacoma guys seem to dig it's sound. I was thinking of picking up the 2525XL.
Re: The exhaust question again?
Sorry, I've never heard of it.
Hopefully somebody will chime in soon w/ helpful info.

Re: The exhaust question again?
Humm i will have to youtube that. I did like the magnaflow sound on video on other peoples 4.3L However I want to get the 3 inch exhaust setup as recommended so I will have to get full custom. It does not look like magnaflow makes anything like that bolt on.

Re: The exhaust question again?
So I have been pondering the intake/exhuast situation on my truck. I came across this:
http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1RL1SRTZFs ... re=related
I'm looking at the Magnaflow mufflers listed on Synergy Offroad and I have 1 thing holding me back from ordering.
Do I get centered in/out or 1 end offset? They are reversible.
Synergy's exhuast section: http://www.shop.synergyoffroad.com/Inta ... st_c33.htm
Magnaflow: http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/universalmuffler.asp
And I'm gonna order the Spectre intake (part # 9901) from summit, because they seem to have the best price at $150 with free shipping: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/spe-9901
Other things to note: Summit also seems to have the best price on magnaflow mufflers, and with free shipping as of right now. Also, the spectre and magnaflow products are made in the USA.

Oh nice. maybe I should spend my extra money for the week there then! I need both things. After this salt storm I will be needing a new muffler.

The more I read into it, I think I'm going to get a 3 inch in/out muffler. I am torn between these 2:HenryJ wrote:The "New" Cherrybomb Vortex muffler is a combination of all three muffler designs. It is unique. I think it might make a good one for the V-6 too.
The Delta flow muffler I had on mine was pretty darn good. I still think the 3" cat back single is the sweet spot for the s-series V-6.
It will all depend upon what you want it to sound like , your driving habits and your environmental conditions.
You are building a horn. Tube size, muffler, length and tip all play a part.
Check with your local muffler guru. They know what works best for your area.

Magnaflow 12249
http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/shop ... n&id=10890
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/mpe-12259?seid=google
Currently, summit has the magnaflow with free shipping for $100, Jegs has the cherry bomb for $82 without shipping. I would guess that with shipping it would work out to about the same price.
I am not looking for loud. I am not looking for the v8 wannabe sound. However, I do not mind louder. I simply want freer flowing, more efficient exhaust than stock. I am in it for the performance, not the sound. The intake was ordered today. Exhaust is next. Then hopefully a tune. I want to get my MPGs up to a number that is not embarrassing.
Thoughts? Has anyone used the vortex cherry bomb series yet? Which one "should" be the quieter of the 2?
I really think either one will be fine.

The cherry bomb is on the 4.3L Blazer I have for sale if you want to hear what it sounds like. I actually love the sound. I am doing the 3 inch exhaust also, but the blazer is a 2.5.

Re: The exhaust question again?
I'm gonna order the magnaflow. **Ordered!**
Let me get this correct though:
3 inch in/out on the cat, reduced to 2.5 inch in/ 2.25 inch out muffler is what's stock?
No need to change the cat to a "high flow" aftermarket cat?
What am I missing?
The plan is 3 inch from cat to muffler to tailpipe routed in the stock location, but tucked up as high as possible.

I'm now trying to find a local exhaust shop with a mandrel bender. The 2 local shops I've dealt with do not have mandrel benders. I may still take it to one of them though.

I don't know. They told me that both were in Ohio on Sunday. I ordered the intake Saturday, the muffler Sunday. I got the muffler yesterday, and the intake today. Tell me how that works?

Makes no sense. I ordered mine both on sunday, and they told me the intake had to be special ordered so it would be shipped separately. Looks like you got the last one they had in stock.

The different part numbers are just the color of the filter. I wonder why they didn't set you up with a different color.

HJ, I got questions
I was told that 3 inch tube in the stock location won't fit. The guy claims he is going to have to "run it out the back". I tried telling him that it appears to have plenty of room. I have an appointment scheduled for 8 in the morning.
Was yours unbolted from the back of the cat, then 3 inch from there? All in the stock location? Any pictures you can find?

Also, on the page with all the mods to that truck listed, it says "removed pre-cat".
Should I?
Edit: I have an 18 inch Magnaflow with 3 inch in/out

3" fits. Many more than just mine have done it. I deleted the precat and added a flange before the main cat. Then 3" all the way back (stock routing)

Re: The exhaust question again?
We got it taken care of. The guy cut the flange off right behind the cat and welded it from there back. Instead of routing it over the leaf spring and out right there, we went around the spare and out just under the hitch. It sounds good, but not loud. I'll get some pictures and hopefully a sound clip in the near future.

Re: The exhaust question again?
I try to keep the exhaust exit as close to the wheel as possible. That area is less likely to get crushed on declination. For my uses exiting the back under the bumper is bad news. The hitch can scrub. Exhaust pipe does not fare well. I have seen many scrubbed and mashed shut back there.
See that little corner where the stock exhaust exits. That clears. Under the back bumper would have been a problem for sure.

Oh boy! Hopefully mine never sees such an incline. Why did you change the routing to around the spare instead of the leaf spring? I was hoping for mine i could keep the stock exit location since firing at the ground gives a better reverb.

That is a playground everyone should add to their bucket list. A real confidence builder. Easy stuff.

Cool! Where is it? its too bad I dont trust mine going much further west than Harrisburg PA or any further south than DC, unless im taking the auto train of course. Until the new engine is installed, I dont want to lay too much faith on the current engine.

Re: The exhaust question again?
Well, it's not under the bumper, it's just barely under the hitch. It's still tucked up nice and high. As for the routing, the guy's bender can't make a bend over a bend. Once the pipe is crushed at one angle, it had to be moved to where the end of the die was at the end of that bend to make another bend, hopefully that makes sense. He only had 1 stick of 3 inch pipe, so we worked with it. The way that the pipe needed bent to fit where the stocker exited, it would have needed bent about 1-2 inches further towards the front of the truck, but couldn't because of the previous bend. We tried it, the bender wouldn't do it. Honestly, I'm more concerned with how close it is to the spare. The spare that is there currently is pretty much junk, a perfect candidate to see if it will melt any. It sounds good, it's fully welded, I couldn't hear/see/feel any leaks, it's tucked up high, it doesn't touch anything but is tight everywhere at the back. I'm happy with it so far. If the spare does start to have issues from the heat, we will cut it off and bend another piece to exit in the stock location. This was discussed.
I should have taken a picture while it was on the lift. I'll get some more when I get it up in the air. I will make a sound clip, but it will probably be Saturday. At highway speeds my tires are louder. It's is louder, but not a ricey or a v8 wannabe sound.

Re: The exhaust question again?
That actually looks pretty darn good
If you have room , you could wrap the exhaust near that tire. It shouldn't be all that hot back there unless you sit and idle lots.

Cool! Looks like some good fun! I wish I lived closer to something like that.HenryJ wrote:"Fins-n-things" Moab, UTApproachMedium wrote:Cool! Where is it?...
Looks like the exhaust routing came out good to me, i wouldnt mind mine being set up like that. I dont have a hitch on mine. There may be one in the future though should my friend ever decide that we are going to tow is 61 Corvair Wagon out to the Woodward Dream Cruise out in Michigan.

It shouldn't be getting too hot. I was actually really surprised. It was a 45 minute drive home, and when I got home, the first thing I did was put on a leather glove and go touch the end.
Warm, but not anywhere near as hot as I expected.

My buddy did this all with some app on an iPhone. It took maybe 10 minutes to do.
If nothing else, this shows how NOT loud it is. As you could see at the end, my tires are a lot louder. We would have done an in cab sound clip, but I don't think you have been able to hear anything but tires. I am happy with it. I really did not want it to be loud and obnoxious. This has definitely made it more free flowing. With both the Spectre air intake and the exhaust, it feels slightly more powerful, although it is still a long way from popping wheelies. Fuel mileage with just the air intake seemed unchanged. When I stop putting my foot down to try to hear the exhaust, hopefully mileage will show a small improvement.
I know, I know..... Paint my wheel weights and put on some center caps.

Re: The exhaust question again?
Nice! Glad I got one of these, now I need to install it. The sound is good, I like that when you drove by all you could hear is the tires, that means i wont be getting all these annoying groans when I am cruising down the highway.
