transmission temp gauge

anybody install an aftermarket trans temp gauge?? i do alot of towing and am thinking of a post bezel mount for the gauge, i am wondering how the temp is taken? im guessing a thermowell in the tranny with a sensor sending an electric signal to the gauge??? just a guess. i am going to install a tranny cooler anyway but thought i might get some advice on a gauge first then i can check temp differential with and without the cooler. any advice is appreciated,
