Fender Flare trim / edging and self tapping screws

Post by teresav »

I ordered edging from here:Minimania.com. Didn't care much for the door edging either. How about the self tapping screws? Let me know what you come up with.

That trim looks interesting, but I don't think it will work very well for this application. This is what I used and would like to find a supplier for -

It is asymmetrical. Meaning the inside edge is longer than the outside edge and it has foam adhesive emblem tape to attach it.

Here is a supplier for the screws- AUVECO- Phillips Flat Top Washer Head Tapping Screws (1/8") Image

It is likely that they can get the trim as well. I am going to check with our local distributor for the edge trim Monday.

It is similar, but not the same. The door edging that you find is symmetrical (both edges the same length inside and out) and it adheres with a sticky glue bead in the fold of the trim.
I have found the glue that they use to be problematic, as it never cures. eventually it drips and oozes. Especially in areas where it is exposed to heat. This acts as a lubricant and the trim tends to push off or out making it impossible to keep in place for an application like this.

On a door edge the glue just runs down and tends to stay better when it is not up against two surfaces that expand and contract at different rates.

This is where the foam tape adhesive really shines. It allows some expansion and contraction without losing it's adhesion. The wider inside lip on the trim is needed to retain the emblem adhesive tape.
I haven't had a chance to do any looking yet, but I know that it should be available.
