Post by bubaloo1983 »

this may sound stupid but is there any parts that our trucks have upfront that can be swapped with full size ifs parts? like control arms or anything like that? cause if there was a way to do it i would be all over it. anyway dont think im dumb just wondering

I don't know much about front ends but if you have ran out of things to do and have the money, go with an SAS and put a Dana 44 on. Like I said, I'm not an expert but there is a lot of good info here http://www.s10forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=68267.

coffefrnkr has done an SAS so I would say he knows quite a bit about it.

Actually, I see that you posted a lot on that thread so you probably already know more about it than I do.

nope. it would all be custom like a SAS would be. if you wanted to keep IFS (dont know why) then i would drop in a full ton IFS. that thing is way stronger that what you have. i think it has a 9.5 ring gear

I've heard the idler and pitman arms can be swapped from a full sized but it takes some tweaking to do it, especially if you have a lift on the truck. I'm looking at the same thing. Reality for me says I need to keep the IFS but I'm looking for anything I can find to beef it up a bit.

yah i have thought about the sas. but like rusty says if its cheaper to just beef it up a bit with some other parts i would rather do that. plus in canada to do an sas is like 5000 bucks. i know a few people have who have done and thats what it cost for parts. if theres a cheaper way let me know

Oh, I didn't say it was cheaper to fix up the IFS. What I was talking about is I decided to stay with the IFS because my Crew and my Blazer will be spending 98% of the time on the street so driveability is an issue. In fact, once I get the Blazer running, I'll probably never take the crew offroading again and do what Jim did to his and put some nice corvette style rims on it, add a rear swaybar and drop the tbars back down. When I do go off road, I stick to the fire trails which are pretty mild. Also, I've heard rumors that Virginia is going to start cracking down on lifts again and I just don't feel like messing with them about it. Then there's the not quite 7ft high doors to my garage that I have to clear, etc, etc, etc. Going SAS for me just didn't make any sense anymore. From a cost perspective, if you have fabrication skills (and I know you do), it might be far cheaper to chop out the IFS, weld in some spring hangers and stuff a Dana 30 from a Jeep under the front than trying to "bulletproof" the stock front end.

swapping out a few parts too beef up the front end is not an option.

either you custom fab a full size IFS or SFA. they will cost you the same.

also, the price depends on whether or not you do the work.

if you dont do it. then i would plan on spending at least 5k

personally, if i were to do it to JUST a street truck. i would score a 10 bolt or dana 30 for FREE. then weld on the hangers, make my own front drive shaft, and then extend brake lines...thats the cheap and easiest part.

the expensive and hardest part would be the steering, but not a big issue, then tires and gears for the rear to match the front. whalla! under 2k easy.
