Oh crap... it rubs

Post by barch97 »

So, I got my new Yokohama Geolandars and had them mounted on the Cragar wheels I got week before last. They look fantastic. I had been a little worried all along about the 2" difference in backspacing from stock as it would effect NJ inspection. I hadn't considered the possibility that it would rub. Both front wheels rub at a turn and a half against my splash guards. So, obviously I removed the splash guards. Now I can turn to full lock without any contact but it comes REALLY close. Like if I turned while going over a bump it's gonna rub the point at the inside bottom of the fender.

This point is just barely above the center of the wheel. I'm hoping than cranking my torsion bars will raise this point a little bit further above center and allow for a little move clearance.

If I understand the T-Bar crank info on the mods page, tightening these bolts effects the front end only. So, my truck will sit a little higher in the front than the back afterward?

Any thoughts opinions etc would be greatly appreciated.

 Been there done that! My new wheels have 1" less offset than stock so they rubbed like a mo fo on the splashguards so I took mine off too.

BTW, you didn't mention in the other post you went with the Geos. 8)

The t-bar crank will help the situation some. What size tires did you get?
I can't remember , but do you have a 2" BL? Have you done any trimming?
I'd say that is next -

ill tell you right now your going to end up cutting...it sucks but its true. i had the same problem on the same area for so long untill i got fed up and took a grinder to the thing :D cranking the bars will not help you becuase it is to little of lift. if you decide to trim get flares or new spalsh gards to cover the nice hole left after wards. GOOD LUCK man! i wish you well

Hmm... Imma try the T-bar crank and see how much more that gets me. It looks like it's just the hem of the fender panel that turns back inward that's rubbing. I'm hoping maybe I can just the bend the corner up and out of the way.

Also, I mis-spoke in my first post here, can go about 3/4 turn of the sterring wheel without touching. Some where between 3/4 & full it makes this AWFUL sound.

I did the crank and it's clear lock to lock in both directions. The wheels are now visibly out of vertical alignment. So, I'm off to the shop.

Thanks for the tips and support, folks. :D

It really didn't take that long. I took a shower on the way back to computer. :D

When I first put my new 16" wheels on with the 255/65/16 tires it rubbed BAD in the front on the spot at the bottom of the fender as you pictured. I took a BFH and did some modification to the bottom of the fender. I was still getting some rubbing so I went to a 235/70/16 tire in the front (same height but not as wide) and problem solved. I've never had any rubbing on the frame or anything but if you went with a deep dish wheel your offset will be WAAAAAAY off from stock so I'm sure you'll have lots of rub issues.

I have some pretty bad rub on my 33's. when i first put them on i could only turn my wheel like 3/4 of the way to lock. I trimmed a little bit and now I can drive normally on the street but have to watch it when it comes to bumps and driveways. I really want to get some fiberglass fenders from www.glassworksunlimited.com that way it cuts out 3" and sticks out 4", so i would never have any rub. They are kind of expensive though.

Cranked and aligned and it still rubs when I go over bumps. So, I did my first BFH body panel mod. :D

That feels GOOD

BFH is what I was going to suggest. Is it rubbing on the actual fender corner or the bottom of the wheel well at the back? If it's thew ehwwl well, trim up about 1" at the edge near the fender with some tin snips then bang away with the BFH. There's a good inch of wheel well that hangs down below the floorpan area of the body at the rear of the wheel well that can be "pushed" out of the way.

no, it was just that little hem on the fender panel that turns in. Didn't take much to bend it up out of the way.

the tires are the same size. the issue was the difference in backspace between stock wheels and my new wheels. 2" doesn't seem like much in a lot of things but, boy golly it makes HUGE difference in a wheel.

It's too bad the 4x4s have the ugly FWD car type offset because there are so many nice looking wheels out there for the 2wd S-10s.
